Internal tensions have surfaced within the Maharashtra government after a senior Shiv Sena minister openly supported a pro-Marathi rally and condemned police action taken against its participants. The rally, held in Mumbai, aimed to advocate for the promotion and protection of the Marathi language and cultural identity. However, the event witnessed heavy police presence, with reports of detentions and restrictions on movement, sparking political backlash.
The Shiv Sena minister, who is part of the ruling coalition that includes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction), took a firm stand against what he termed an “unjustified crackdown” by law enforcement authorities. In a strongly worded public statement, he said the police response was disproportionate and undermined the democratic rights of citizens to protest peacefully in support of their linguistic and cultural identity.
“The people of Maharashtra have every right to uphold their language and heritage. The excessive police action against peaceful protesters is unacceptable and sends the wrong message,” the minister stated, adding that he would raise the issue in the next cabinet meeting.
His comments have caused visible discomfort within the ruling alliance. While some leaders distanced themselves from the minister’s remarks, others remained silent, indicating growing unease over divergent views on sensitive cultural matters. The Home Department, led by a BJP minister, has defended the police action, citing the need to maintain public order and prevent any disruption in the city.
The rally had been organized by various Marathi cultural organizations and community leaders, demanding greater use of the Marathi language in administrative and educational institutions, better representation of Marathi-speaking people in jobs, and stricter enforcement of language policies in public signage.
Despite obtaining partial permission, organizers alleged that police attempted to limit participation and detained several attendees under preventive measures. Visuals of clashes and scuffles between protesters and law enforcement went viral on social media, further intensifying the political debate.
Opposition parties, including the Congress and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction, have criticized the coalition government for suppressing legitimate public expression. They accused the administration of being insensitive to the sentiments of the Marathi-speaking population and demanded an independent inquiry into the police action.
Political analysts view the incident as a sign of underlying fractures within the ruling coalition, especially on culturally sensitive issues. With the upcoming civic and state elections, the response to Marathi identity-related matters could influence voter sentiment.
The Chief Minister has yet to issue an official response. However, sources indicate that the issue will likely be discussed at the highest levels of government in the coming days to prevent further internal conflict and public backlash.
As the situation unfolds, the government faces the challenge of balancing law enforcement, coalition unity, and cultural sensitivities in a politically volatile environment.
