Thackeray Family Reunion Talks Stir Debate Within MNS Amid Past Rivalries

“It’s not just about family ties anymore — it’s about political identity,” said Mumbai-based analyst Hemant Desai.

Amid growing speculation over a possible reunion between estranged cousins Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray, political activity in Maharashtra is heating up. The possibility of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena (UBT) joining forces ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections has sparked both excitement and concern — especially within the second-tier leadership of MNS.

The buzz around a Thackeray family reconciliation comes as both leaders face challenges in consolidating their political base. While Raj Thackeray’s MNS has been struggling to gain electoral traction, Uddhav Thackeray’s faction is reeling from the split caused by Eknath Shinde’s rebellion and the BJP’s growing influence in the state. A potential alliance could re-energize their voter base, but insiders say not everyone in the MNS is on board.

Several mid-level MNS leaders have reportedly expressed opposition to the idea, pointing to the acrimonious history between the two parties, including verbal spats, public accusations, and ideological conflicts. “We were built on the promise of an alternative to the Shiv Sena. How can we now ally with them without betraying our supporters?” a senior MNS functionary was quoted saying anonymously.

Tensions between the two factions go back to 2006, when Raj Thackeray parted ways with the Shiv Sena, accusing Uddhav of sidelining core ideological values. Since then, MNS has often attempted to carve a distinct identity with a strong regionalist tone, which some fear could be diluted in a reunification.

While Raj Thackeray has kept his recent meetings private, sources suggest that informal backchannel talks have taken place between both camps. Political analysts believe the talks may have been encouraged by common electoral interests, especially in urban Marathi-speaking constituencies where both parties have overlapping appeal.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) has been cautious in its response. A party spokesperson recently commented, “Uddhavji has always believed in the broader Marathi cause. If unity can strengthen that mission, all options will be explored.” However, no formal talks or agreements have been confirmed.

Political observers suggest that any alliance between the two Thackerays would need careful handling to address internal resistance, manage grassroots expectations, and outline a clear ideological roadmap. “It’s not just about family ties anymore — it’s about political identity,” said Mumbai-based analyst Hemant Desai.

As Maharashtra inches closer to state elections, all eyes are on whether this rumored Thackeray reunion will materialize — or fracture further under the weight of old grudges.
