The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has strongly criticized the Election Commission’s (EC) explanation regarding the presence of duplicate voter ID numbers, calling it an attempt to cover up a serious issue that could impact election integrity. The controversy arose after reports surfaced about multiple voters being assigned identical voter ID numbers, leading to suspicions of irregularities in the electoral roll.
TMC leaders have alleged that the EC's response to these concerns has been vague and insufficient, failing to address the core issue of potential voter fraud. They argue that duplicate voter IDs could allow manipulation of election results and undermine the democratic process. The party has demanded a comprehensive investigation into the matter and urged the EC to ensure complete transparency in resolving such discrepancies.
In its clarification, the Election Commission dismissed allegations of foul play, stating that the duplication of voter ID numbers is primarily due to technical glitches in the voter registration system. Officials assured that corrective measures are being taken to rectify errors and ensure a clean and transparent electoral roll before the upcoming elections.
Despite the EC’s assurance, opposition parties, including the TMC, remain unconvinced. They insist that the issue needs independent scrutiny to prevent any potential misuse during the polls. With elections approaching, the controversy over duplicate voter IDs has added another layer of political tension, raising questions about electoral accountability and fairness.
