Union Minister Giriraj Singh has raised an alarm over recent incidents of violence in Murshidabad, stating that several Hindu families are allegedly being forced to flee due to fear and targeted attacks. His comments, made during a media interaction, have sparked a political debate over the state of law and order in West Bengal.
Speaking to reporters, Singh said, “The situation in Murshidabad is deeply disturbing. Hindus are being targeted, and many are fleeing from their homes out of fear. This is not just a local issue but a national concern, as it questions the safety and dignity of Indian citizens.”
He accused the West Bengal government of failing to protect its citizens and claimed that political inaction has worsened the communal tensions. Singh urged the central government and law enforcement agencies to step in and ensure that peace and normalcy are restored. He also appealed for a thorough investigation into the incidents, asking for those responsible to be held accountable under law.
According to local reports, the violence allegedly stemmed from a dispute during a religious procession, which escalated and led to clashes between different community groups. Several houses were damaged, and incidents of arson and stone-pelting were reported. Police have increased their presence in the area, and temporary security measures have been deployed to prevent further escalation.
The West Bengal government has yet to issue an official statement responding to Singh’s claims, but local authorities have confirmed that a probe is underway. Meanwhile, opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have demanded action and called for the deployment of central forces in sensitive areas.
In contrast, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders have accused the BJP of politicizing the issue and spreading communal tension for electoral gains. TMC spokespersons stated that law enforcement is actively working to control the situation and protect citizens of all communities.
Residents of Murshidabad remain anxious, with some families temporarily relocating to nearby areas for safety. Community leaders have called for peace and appealed to people not to fall prey to rumors or incitement.
As investigations continue, the matter is likely to remain in political focus, especially with elections drawing near. Ensuring communal harmony and law enforcement will be key to addressing public concerns and restoring confidence among residents.
