Opposition leaders countered the Chief Minister’s claims, alleging lapses in governance and questioning the effectiveness of the government’s actions.

The Uttar Pradesh Assembly witnessed sharp political exchanges after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath responded to opposition allegations related to deaths linked to illegal codeine syrup and the illicit drug trade in the state. Addressing the House, the Chief Minister rejected the accusations and defended his government’s record on law enforcement and public safety.

During his speech, CM Yogi made a veiled remark referring to “two namune in the country,” a statement that opposition leaders interpreted as an indirect reference to Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Though he did not name anyone, the comment triggered strong reactions from opposition benches, intensifying the debate in the Assembly.

The Chief Minister stated that his government had taken firm action against illegal drug networks and pharmaceutical misuse. He highlighted measures undertaken by law enforcement agencies to curb the illegal trade of narcotics and counterfeit medicines, asserting that strict monitoring and enforcement had been implemented across the state. CM Yogi also accused previous governments of failing to act decisively against such activities.

Opposition leaders countered the Chief Minister’s claims, alleging lapses in governance and questioning the effectiveness of the government’s actions. Samajwadi Party members raised concerns about reported deaths linked to substance misuse and demanded accountability. They argued that public safety should take precedence over political rhetoric.

Following the remarks made by CM Yogi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav responded sharply, criticising the language used in the Assembly. He accused the Chief Minister of avoiding substantive issues and resorting to personal remarks instead of addressing concerns raised by the opposition. The exchange further heightened tensions between the ruling party and the opposition.

Political analysts note that debates surrounding law and order, drug control, and public health remain key political issues in Uttar Pradesh. Statements made during Assembly proceedings often reflect broader political narratives ahead of upcoming electoral contests. The latest exchange underscores the ongoing confrontation between the BJP-led state government and opposition parties over governance and accountability.

Despite the heated debate, Assembly proceedings continued with discussions on policy measures and administrative responses related to drug regulation and enforcement. Officials reiterated that investigations into illegal drug distribution networks remain ongoing and assured that action would be taken against those found violating the law.

The incident has drawn attention beyond the Assembly, with political leaders and observers weighing in on the tone of discourse and the underlying issues raised during the debate.
