Kolkata, June 13 – Tensions flared inside the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Thursday as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs launched a strong protest over what they claimed was the state government's failure to control repeated incidents of political violence. The opposition legislators stormed the well of the House, raised slogans, and displayed placards condemning the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government’s alleged inaction.

The protest began shortly after the session commenced. BJP MLAs demanded a detailed discussion on the recent spate of clashes that have taken place across various districts, particularly in rural Bengal. Alleging that the violence is politically motivated and that law and order has completely deteriorated, the BJP leaders demanded accountability from the government.

Speaker Biman Banerjee urged the BJP legislators to return to their seats and allow the House to function. However, the continuous sloganeering and disruption led him to adjourn the Assembly proceedings temporarily.

Addressing the media outside the Assembly, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said, "The law and order situation in Bengal has collapsed. From panchayat level to urban areas, political violence has become a daily reality. Our protest today was to highlight the voice of the people who are suffering under this misrule."

In response, senior TMC leaders accused the BJP of dramatizing the issue for political mileage. “The BJP is trying to disrupt the Assembly and spread misinformation. The government has taken every step to maintain peace and will not tolerate any attempt to disturb harmony,” said a TMC spokesperson.

The recent incidents that triggered the protest include violent clashes during local body elections, reports of political workers being attacked, and alleged police inaction in several regions. Videos of unrest in places like Cooch Behar, Birbhum, and Howrah have surfaced on social media, further intensifying the public and political discourse.

The ruckus in the Assembly is seen as a reflection of the growing hostility between the BJP and the TMC in West Bengal’s political landscape. Analysts suggest that as the state gears up for the 2026 Assembly elections, such confrontations are likely to increase both inside and outside the legislature.

Meanwhile, civil society groups have called on all political parties to maintain decorum and focus on constructive debates, especially on issues that impact the lives of ordinary citizens. The continuing disruption in the House has also raised concerns over legislative functioning and governance in the state.

The Assembly is expected to reconvene tomorrow, but tensions remain high as BJP has indicated that its protest will continue until the government provides a clear explanation and assurance regarding the steps being taken to address the violence.

The government has taken every step to maintain peace and will not tolerate any attempt to disturb harmony,” said a TMC spokesperson.
