The decision aligns with the state’s broader environmental policy goals, including reducing vehicular emissions, controlling air pollution in tourist-heavy regions, and promoting alternative transport solutions.

Dehradun, Uttarakhand:

On the occasion of Uttarakhand’s 25th anniversary, the state government has announced the introduction of a Green Cess on vehicles registered in other states. The new policy aims to curb environmental pollution, reduce carbon emissions, and promote sustainable transportation within the hilly state. Uttarakhand, known for its pristine environment and natural landscapes, has emphasized the need for proactive measures to safeguard its ecological balance amid increasing vehicular traffic.

According to officials, the Green Cess will be levied on all vehicles entering Uttarakhand from other states. The fee is expected to generate funds that will be utilized for environmental conservation projects, development of eco-friendly infrastructure, and maintenance of highways and roads. Vehicles registered within Uttarakhand will not be subject to the cess, ensuring that local commuters are not impacted financially.

The decision aligns with the state’s broader environmental policy goals, including reducing vehicular emissions, controlling air pollution in tourist-heavy regions, and promoting alternative transport solutions. Uttarakhand sees a high influx of vehicles, especially in popular tourist destinations like Mussoorie, Nainital, Rishikesh, and Dehradun, which contribute to congestion and environmental stress. The Green Cess is expected to mitigate these issues by encouraging visitors to opt for shared transport or public vehicles.

State Environment Minister highlighted that this initiative is part of Uttarakhand’s long-term strategy to maintain ecological balance while supporting tourism and local economic activities. Funds collected through the Green Cess will be directed toward initiatives such as tree plantation drives, maintenance of protected forests, air quality monitoring, and promotion of electric vehicles.

Environmental experts have welcomed the move, stating that such policy measures are critical for sustainable development in ecologically sensitive regions. The Green Cess is also expected to raise awareness among visitors and residents about the importance of reducing vehicular pollution and adopting eco-friendly practices.

The state government has also launched awareness campaigns to inform tourists and vehicle owners about the cess, its purpose, and implementation guidelines. Toll points and entry checkpoints will enforce the new policy, and digital systems are being introduced to facilitate seamless payment and reduce traffic delays.

As Uttarakhand celebrates its 25th anniversary, the Green Cess reflects the state’s commitment to a cleaner and greener future. Officials emphasized that this initiative is not just a revenue measure but a step toward promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable tourism.

With rising environmental challenges across India, Uttarakhand’s approach could serve as a model for other states aiming to balance economic activity with ecological preservation. The government plans periodic reviews of the Green Cess to ensure effectiveness and to make necessary adjustments based on feedback from the public and environmental agencies.

The new policy aims to curb environmental pollution, reduce carbon emissions, and promote sustainable transportation within the hilly state.
