Kolkata, West Bengal:
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has asked state police and administrative officers to remain vigilant in light of recent intelligence inputs suggesting potential terror threats in regions close to the international border. During a security review meeting held in Kolkata, Banerjee expressed concern over the evolving security scenario and directed officials to take all necessary precautions to prevent any untoward incidents.
The meeting, which was attended by senior police officials, district magistrates, and intelligence personnel, focused primarily on areas bordering Bangladesh. These regions, which include districts like North 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, Malda, and Cooch Behar, have previously been flagged for cross-border smuggling and illegal movement.
Banerjee emphasized that while West Bengal remains peaceful, the proximity to international borders requires constant monitoring. “We cannot afford to be complacent. Our state shares sensitive borders, and we must remain alert to prevent infiltration or any activities that can threaten public safety,” she said.
She instructed police departments to increase foot patrols in border villages and intensify intelligence gathering. Law enforcement agencies were also told to work in close coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF) and central intelligence agencies. The Chief Minister highlighted that community policing and local cooperation would play a vital role in maintaining vigilance and public trust.
In addition to monitoring possible terror threats, Mamata Banerjee also discussed the need to address other security challenges such as illegal arms trafficking and narcotics smuggling. She directed district officials to maintain strict oversight over vulnerable zones and ensure swift action against any violations of law and order.
Sources present at the meeting said the Chief Minister called for immediate reporting of any suspicious movements or unknown individuals in sensitive areas. Special focus was given to railway stations, bus terminals, religious sites, and crowded public areas where potential threats could be more pronounced.
Banerjee also reviewed the functioning of local intelligence units and instructed them to maintain updated databases on cross-border movement and monitor any unusual activities in coordination with national agencies. She assured that the state government would provide all logistical and operational support required by security personnel.
The directive comes amid heightened security awareness across India, with multiple states stepping up preventive measures following intelligence alerts from central agencies. Though no specific threat has been disclosed publicly, the Chief Minister’s proactive stance is seen as part of a broader effort to maintain law and order, especially ahead of upcoming festivals and political events.
Political analysts noted that Mamata Banerjee’s focus on internal security is consistent with her recent calls for maintaining communal harmony and ensuring safety for all communities in the state. Her administration has also previously taken steps to improve police infrastructure in border districts.
The state government has urged citizens to remain calm and report anything suspicious through official channels. Security forces have assured that adequate measures are in place and the situation is being continuously monitored.
