The campaign, launched ahead of the upcoming state elections, aims to make voting information accessible, engaging, and relatable, particularly for first-time voters and younger demographics.

Kolkata, West Bengal:

In an innovative move to boost voter turnout, the West Bengal Election Commission (WBEC) has adopted the iconic characters Goopy and Bagha from Satyajit Ray’s celebrated film series to promote electoral awareness among citizens. The campaign, launched ahead of the upcoming state elections, aims to make voting information accessible, engaging, and relatable, particularly for first-time voters and younger demographics.

The campaign features animated videos, digital posters, and social media content showcasing Goopy and Bagha explaining the importance of voting, how to register, and the steps to cast a valid ballot. The Election Commission hopes that leveraging the nostalgia and popularity of these cultural icons will strengthen public engagement and encourage more citizens to participate in the democratic process.

Officials emphasized that voter education is a critical component of free and fair elections. According to WBEC representatives, awareness campaigns using traditional methods like pamphlets and posters often fail to capture the attention of younger voters. By integrating well-known characters with a strong cultural connection, the EC aims to bridge the gap between civic duty and popular culture.

The animated campaign also includes content highlighting the impact of informed voting, the significance of each vote, and the responsibilities of a citizen in a democracy. Educational content will be broadcast across television channels, social media platforms, and in public spaces such as schools and colleges to reach a diverse audience.

West Bengal’s Chief Electoral Officer stated that this approach is part of a larger effort to modernize election awareness initiatives and embrace creative strategies that resonate with citizens. “By using Goopy and Bagha, we are bringing voter education closer to people in an enjoyable and culturally familiar format. Our goal is to empower citizens to exercise their rights responsibly,” the official said.

Political analysts noted that such campaigns can positively impact voter engagement, especially among first-time voters who may not be fully aware of the voting process. Similar initiatives in other states have successfully increased registration rates and turnout by combining education with entertainment.

In addition to digital campaigns, the EC plans to organize interactive workshops and community events where volunteers will perform skits and presentations featuring Goopy and Bagha. These events aim to simplify complex election procedures and address common misconceptions about voting.

The WBEC’s Goopy Bagha campaign reflects a growing trend of election commissions across India exploring innovative, culturally resonant methods to educate voters. By blending entertainment with civic responsibility, the state hopes to inspire higher electoral participation and strengthen democratic engagement among its citizens.
