West Bengal is facing a massive educational and political crisis after the Calcutta High Court ordered the cancellation of 25,752 teaching appointments, citing large-scale irregularities in the recruitment process conducted by the School Service Commission (SSC). The verdict has sent shockwaves across the state, particularly among those affected teachers who now face an uncertain future.
The court order was based on findings that the recruitment process for the 2016 batch of teachers was riddled with procedural lapses, favoritism, and violation of norms. The decision came after multiple complaints and legal battles that challenged the transparency of the appointments. According to the court, many candidates were appointed despite not qualifying under merit or eligibility criteria.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly opposed the court's decision, expressing solidarity with the terminated teachers and promising to explore all legal options. She alleged that the decision will "ruin the careers" of thousands who had worked honestly for years. The state government is expected to file an appeal in the Supreme Court.
The issue has quickly turned into a political flashpoint. Opposition parties in the state, including BJP and CPI(M), have accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of institutional corruption and demanded accountability from those in power. They claim this is not just a judicial verdict but a clear indictment of the government's failure to ensure fairness in public sector hiring.
Protests have erupted across the state, with affected teachers demanding reinstatement or a fresh review of their appointments. Many expressed shock and disbelief, claiming they had cleared exams and interviews through genuine effort and now find themselves unemployed overnight.
This development not only questions the integrity of recruitment agencies but also creates significant disruption in Bengal’s public education system, where a teacher shortage may soon become a reality. As legal and political battles continue, the fate of thousands hangs in the balance.
