The Winter Session of Parliament was disrupted following a confrontation between the government and the opposition after Union Minister Kiren Rijiju sought an apology over alleged slogans targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The issue triggered loud protests and counter-protests, leading to repeated adjournments in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
Rijiju accused opposition members of raising slogans that, according to him, were inappropriate and undermined the dignity of Parliament. He asserted that such conduct was unacceptable and called for a formal apology from senior opposition leaders. Members from the ruling benches supported Rijiju’s demand, stating that maintaining parliamentary decorum is essential for the smooth functioning of legislative proceedings.
Opposition leaders strongly refuted the allegations, maintaining that they had not engaged in any unparliamentary behaviour. They accused the government of using the issue as a pretext to disrupt proceedings and avoid discussion on pressing national concerns. According to the opposition, raising procedural objections has become a frequent tactic to prevent meaningful debate during parliamentary sessions.
As tensions escalated, members from both sides raised slogans inside the House, prompting the presiding officers to adjourn proceedings multiple times. Scheduled debates and legislative business were affected, with several important discussions being postponed.
Political observers note that disruptions during Parliament sessions have become increasingly common, reflecting heightened political polarization. The Winter Session has already seen several standoffs over issues such as governance, economic policy, and accountability, making consensus-building difficult.
The government has emphasized the need for discipline and orderly conduct, arguing that Parliament is the primary forum for democratic debate and law-making. Officials stated that disagreements should be resolved through discussion rather than disruptions.
Meanwhile, opposition parties reiterated their demand for adequate time to debate national issues and accused the government of restricting discussion through procedural measures. They argued that protests within the House are sometimes necessary to draw attention to unresolved concerns.
The latest confrontation highlights the ongoing challenges facing parliamentary functioning amid deep political divides. As the Winter Session continues, both the government and opposition face increasing pressure to restore normalcy and ensure that legislative work proceeds without further disruption.
The episode underscores the importance of dialogue, mutual respect, and adherence to parliamentary norms to uphold the democratic process and ensure effective governance.
