In response, officials from the Election Commission have maintained that the ongoing revision in Bihar is part of a routine and scheduled process aimed at updating electoral rolls to reflect changes due to migration, death, or eligibility.

In a move highlighting rising political concern over electoral processes, DMK Member of Parliament Tiruchi Siva has submitted a notice under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha, seeking a detailed discussion on the ongoing voter list revision in Bihar. The notice calls for the suspension of scheduled business in the House to take up what he described as an urgent and significant matter related to democratic integrity.

Rule 267 allows a Member of Parliament to seek adjournment of regular business in the Upper House to discuss an issue of national importance. Tiruchi Siva stated that the revision of the electoral rolls in Bihar, taking place ahead of the upcoming state and national elections, raises serious questions about transparency, timing, and possible administrative bias.

According to the DMK MP, any inconsistencies or lack of clarity in the revision process could have wide-reaching implications for the democratic rights of citizens. He emphasised that free and fair elections depend heavily on the accuracy of the voter list, and any irregularities in its preparation or revision must be addressed in a timely and transparent manner.

Siva pointed out that reports from certain constituencies in Bihar suggest mass deletions and questionable inclusions in the electoral rolls. Opposition parties have expressed concerns that such revisions, if conducted without strict oversight, could lead to voter suppression or manipulation of electoral outcomes.

Speaking to the media, Siva said, “This is not just a regional issue; it is a national concern. Any process that potentially compromises the democratic participation of citizens deserves serious attention from Parliament.”

The move by the DMK leader has found support from several other opposition parties, which have also demanded that the Election Commission provide clarity on the voter list revision process, including the criteria used for deletions and additions. They argue that transparency and accountability must be ensured to maintain public trust in electoral institutions.

In response, officials from the Election Commission have maintained that the ongoing revision in Bihar is part of a routine and scheduled process aimed at updating electoral rolls to reflect changes due to migration, death, or eligibility. They have assured that all procedures are being followed as per existing laws and that adequate safeguards are in place to prevent errors.

Despite these assurances, political leaders like Siva insist that public scrutiny and parliamentary discussion are essential to ensure that the process remains impartial and free from manipulation. The issue is expected to be raised further during parliamentary sessions, as parties across the spectrum gear up for crucial state and general elections.

The demand for discussion under Rule 267 underscores the broader national debate on electoral reforms and the need for continuous vigilance to protect democratic norms. With the eyes of political observers now focused on Bihar, the voter list revision has taken on added significance in the context of the country’s democratic functioning.

The issue is expected to be raised further during parliamentary sessions, as parties across the spectrum gear up for crucial state and general elections.
