From Reliance to Rajya Sabha: Dhanraj Nathwani’s SP Candidature Puts Nathwani Family’s Political Jou

The Rajya Sabha election in Uttar Pradesh is taking place ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, making developments involving the state’s major political parties an important part of the broader political landscape.

The Samajwadi Party’s decision to nominate Reliance Industries Group President Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani for the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh has drawn considerable attention to his corporate background and his family’s long association with Indian politics.

The SP announced Dhanraj Nathwani as one of its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election in Uttar Pradesh. Veteran party leader Ram Gopal Yadav was named alongside him. Dhanraj subsequently filed his nomination papers in Lucknow in the presence of SP president Akhilesh Yadav and other party leaders.

Dhanraj Nathwani has spent much of his professional career in the corporate sector. He is a Group President at Reliance Industries and has been associated with several businesses and infrastructure-related activities within the Reliance group. He is also the president of the Gujarat Cricket Association and has been involved in sports administration and other public-facing institutions.

His nomination has attracted particular attention because of his family background. His father, Parimal Dhirajlal Nathwani, is a senior Reliance executive and a Rajya Sabha member from Jharkhand. Parimal Nathwani recently returned to the Upper House with the backing of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance as an Independent candidate. This has created an unusual political situation in which the father has received support from the NDA while his son has been selected as a Rajya Sabha candidate by the Samajwadi Party, one of the BJP’s principal political opponents in Uttar Pradesh.

Parimal Nathwani’s political career has also involved support from different political groups at different points. According to reports, he first entered the Rajya Sabha from Jharkhand as an Independent candidate in 2008 and subsequently returned to Parliament on multiple occasions. He also represented Andhra Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha during a previous term with the support of the YSR Congress Party. His latest return from Jharkhand came with NDA backing.

Parimal Nathwani’s political journey has therefore extended beyond a single party structure. His career has combined his corporate responsibilities at Reliance with his work in Parliament. The latest nomination of his son by the Samajwadi Party has brought renewed attention to those political relationships and to the different forms of support Nathwani has received during his parliamentary career.

Dhanraj Nathwani’s own public profile has largely been built through his corporate and administrative work rather than through a long electoral career. He has held responsibilities within the Reliance group and has also been involved in sports administration in Gujarat. His nomination represents a move from the corporate sector into direct electoral politics through the Upper House.

The Samajwadi Party’s decision has also generated discussion because Dhanraj Nathwani does not have a conventional background as a long-time SP politician. The party had already indicated that it could select an unexpected candidate for one of its Rajya Sabha seats. His nomination therefore attracted attention both within political circles and outside the party.

The timing of the nomination is also significant. The Rajya Sabha election in Uttar Pradesh is taking place ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, making developments involving the state’s major political parties an important part of the broader political landscape. The SP is preparing for the Assembly election while also managing its parliamentary representation in the Upper House.

The Nathwani family’s connections with both the corporate sector and political institutions have consequently become a subject of public discussion following the nomination. However, the fact that Parimal Nathwani received support from the NDA while Dhanraj Nathwani has been nominated by the SP should not by itself be interpreted as evidence of a formal political arrangement between the different parties and the family. The political affiliations and decisions of each individual need to be considered separately.

Dhanraj Nathwani has expressed gratitude to Akhilesh Yadav for the opportunity and described his entry into public life as a new phase. His nomination will now be subject to the Rajya Sabha election process in Uttar Pradesh.

The development has also placed greater attention on the relationship between corporate experience and parliamentary politics. Nathwani’s career at Reliance, combined with his involvement in sports administration and public institutions, forms the main part of his professional profile before his entry into electoral politics.

For the Samajwadi Party, his candidature adds a corporate and administrative profile to its Rajya Sabha nominees. For Dhanraj Nathwani, the nomination marks a transition from senior corporate responsibilities to a potential role in Parliament. The outcome of the Rajya Sabha election will determine whether he formally enters the Upper House.

Overall, the nomination has brought the Nathwani family’s political and corporate backgrounds into focus, particularly because father and son are currently associated with candidates or political support from different sides of the political spectrum. The developments also illustrate the range of political relationships that can emerge around Rajya Sabha elections, where candidates can enter Parliament through different forms of party and political support.

The SP is preparing for the Assembly election while also managing its parliamentary representation in the Upper House.
