Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue of an alleged attack on former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah during the proceedings of the Upper House on Thursday. The matter quickly drew attention from Opposition parties, who demanded a discussion on the situation and expressed concern about the safety of senior political leaders.
As soon as the House resumed its scheduled proceedings, several Opposition members stood up and requested permission to speak about the reported attack. Some members also moved toward the well of the House to register their protest and demand an immediate response from the government.
Chairman of the Rajya Sabha C. P. Radhakrishnan responded to the concerns raised by the Opposition members. He assured the House that Kharge would be given an opportunity to present his views and raise the issue formally during the session. The assurance helped restore order in the chamber after a brief period of disruption.
While addressing the matter, Kharge criticised the central government and said the incident involving Farooq Abdullah raises serious questions about political security and governance. He stated that attacks or threats against prominent political figures undermine democratic values and must be addressed with seriousness.
Kharge also used the opportunity to repeat the long standing demand of several Opposition parties for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. He said that the region has been functioning as a Union Territory for several years and that democratic representation should be strengthened through the return of statehood.
The demand for restoration of statehood has been a recurring political issue since the reorganisation of the region during the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act 2019. The law changed the administrative structure of the region by dividing the former state into two Union Territories which are Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Opposition leaders have repeatedly argued that restoring statehood would help strengthen democratic governance and ensure greater accountability. They also believe it would improve political stability and public confidence in the administration.
Supporters of the government position have said that the reorganisation was necessary to improve development security and governance in the region. They have also stated that the process toward restoring statehood may take place at an appropriate time once administrative and security conditions improve.
The discussion in the Rajya Sabha reflects the continuing political debate over the future governance structure of Jammu and Kashmir. Political parties across the country continue to hold differing views on how the region should be administered and how democratic processes should be strengthened.
The issue of the reported attack on Farooq Abdullah has added another dimension to this debate as Opposition parties argue that political leaders must be able to operate safely while participating in democratic activities.
Parliamentary discussions on the matter are expected to continue as political leaders seek clarification from the government regarding both the incident and the broader question of the region political status.
