They claimed that the Election Commission had undertaken the revision without appropriate consultations and transparency, particularly in constituencies where the ruling party faces electoral challenges.

The Rajya Sabha witnessed repeated disruptions on Thursday, eventually leading to its adjournment for the day, as opposition parties raised strong objections over the issue of the special summary revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. The protests were led by Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien and supported by several members from the INDIA bloc.

Opposition members alleged that the ongoing voter roll revision exercise in Bihar was being carried out in an irregular and selective manner. They claimed that the Election Commission had undertaken the revision without appropriate consultations and transparency, particularly in constituencies where the ruling party faces electoral challenges. The MPs demanded an immediate debate on the matter in the Upper House.

As the session began, opposition members raised slogans and demanded the suspension of business to discuss what they termed a serious breach of electoral fairness. They argued that the special summary revision could impact the credibility of the electoral process ahead of upcoming state elections and possibly the 2026 delimitation.

Trinamool’s Derek O’Brien accused the government of avoiding accountability by not allowing the matter to be discussed in Parliament. He stated that the voter list revision in Bihar could have long-term implications for democratic processes and demanded that the Union Home Ministry and Election Commission provide a detailed explanation.

The Chair attempted to maintain order and urged members to return to their seats, stating that the matter could be raised under proper procedural rules. However, continued sloganeering and refusal to relent forced multiple adjournments. Eventually, Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day without conducting its full scheduled agenda, which included several key bills and discussions.

Government sources defended the revision exercise, saying it was a routine administrative step initiated by the Election Commission and not influenced by any political directive. They argued that similar summary revisions are conducted across states periodically and that Bihar's exercise followed constitutional guidelines.

However, opposition leaders were not convinced and vowed to continue raising the issue until a formal statement was made in the House. Congress leaders also supported Trinamool’s demand and alleged that such electoral changes, if done without consensus, could distort voter demographics in sensitive constituencies.

The issue has further intensified tensions in Parliament, which has already seen multiple walkouts and disruptions during the ongoing monsoon session over various other matters including the NEET exam irregularities, inflation, and unemployment.

As the controversy unfolds, political observers note that the electoral roll revision in Bihar could become a flashpoint in the months leading to the 2026 delimitation and future elections. With both ruling and opposition parties gearing up for an electoral showdown, any perception of administrative overreach could impact political narratives on transparency and electoral integrity.

The Rajya Sabha is expected to reconvene with this issue likely to remain on the agenda as opposition parties prepare for coordinated floor action in the coming days.

As the session began, opposition members raised slogans and demanded the suspension of business to discuss what they termed a serious breach of electoral fairness.
