As per parliamentary tradition, both houses of Parliament have the discretion to adjourn proceedings to pay tribute to distinguished members or former ministers who have passed away.

New Delhi, August 4, 2025 – The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day as a mark of respect to veteran leader and former Union Minister Shibu Soren, whose recent passing has been mourned across party lines and political spectrums. The upper house of Parliament began its session with tributes to the late leader, highlighting his long and impactful political journey.

Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha Jagdeep Dhankhar led the House in paying homage, stating that Shibu Soren’s contributions to Indian politics, particularly for the rights and welfare of tribal communities, would be remembered with deep respect. Members observed a moment of silence to honor his legacy before adjourning the House for the remainder of the day.

Soren, a founding figure of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), served multiple terms as a Member of Parliament and held key positions, including as Union Minister for Coal. His political career spanned over five decades, during which he became a strong voice for the underprivileged, especially tribal populations in eastern India.

He was instrumental in the formation of the state of Jharkhand, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the region's indigenous communities. Known affectionately as "Guruji", Soren was not only a political leader but also a symbol of tribal identity and resilience. His leadership was marked by grassroots mobilization and advocacy for land rights, education, and social justice.

In the Rajya Sabha, leaders from across the political spectrum remembered Soren’s humility, steadfastness, and dedication to the democratic process. Many recalled his commitment to the principles of equality and inclusion, often working beyond party politics to address the concerns of marginalized groups.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a separate statement, also expressed condolences, noting that Shibu Soren’s contribution to Indian public life and his struggle for the rights of tribal people would remain a source of inspiration for future generations.

As per parliamentary tradition, both houses of Parliament have the discretion to adjourn proceedings to pay tribute to distinguished members or former ministers who have passed away. The decision to suspend the Rajya Sabha session was taken unanimously, with members agreeing that it was a fitting gesture to honor the legacy of a leader who had spent much of his life serving the people.

Soren’s demise has left a significant void in Indian politics, particularly in the tribal regions of the country. Several political parties, social organizations, and citizens across India have extended their condolences and paid homage to his life and legacy.

The Rajya Sabha will resume proceedings in the next scheduled session, but the memory of Shibu Soren’s contributions is expected to remain a recurring theme in ongoing political discussions and policy considerations related to tribal welfare and regional development.
