The Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh, has rejected a notice filed by opposition members seeking the removal of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar from his position. The notice, which was submitted by opposition MPs, accused Dhankhar of displaying bias and partiality in his conduct as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, particularly in the handling of opposition demands and proceedings in the Upper House.
The Opposition had raised concerns over what they termed Dhankhar’s “unilateral” actions during debates and alleged interference in the functioning of the House, which they argued undermined the rights of opposition members. The move to seek his removal was viewed as a direct challenge to the Vice President's impartiality in the role, which has been a subject of contention for some time.
However, the Deputy Chairman dismissed the notice, citing that it did not meet the procedural requirements laid down under the rules of the Rajya Sabha. The dismissal of the notice has added fuel to the ongoing political debate, with opposition leaders vowing to intensify their protest and challenge the ruling party's control over parliamentary processes.
The rejection has sparked a fresh round of accusations from the opposition, who have criticized the government for allegedly undermining the independence of the Rajya Sabha. As the tensions rise, political observers are closely monitoring how the issue will play out in the coming days, particularly as both the government and the opposition prepare for the next session of Parliament.
This development has further polarized political discourse, with each side accusing the other of eroding democratic norms and institutions. The dismissal of the notice is expected to lead to more confrontations in the future as opposition parties continue to raise concerns about parliamentary procedures and the functioning of the Rajya Sabha under Dhankhar's chairmanship.
