Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Swati Maliwal on Tuesday criticized the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab over its handling of examination-related irregularities. Speaking to reporters, she alleged that the state had witnessed six major paper leak incidents during the past five years and called for greater accountability in protecting the integrity of public examinations.
According to Maliwal, repeated incidents of question paper leaks and examination malpractice have raised concerns among students and job aspirants. She also referred to allegations of cheating during a pharmacy examination reportedly held on July 19, claiming that the incident reflected continuing challenges in the state's examination system.
Maliwal questioned the response of AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal, alleging that he has remained silent on the issue despite playing a significant role in the party's affairs in Punjab. Referring to Kejriwal as a "super Chief Minister," she claimed that he exercises considerable influence over the state's administration and should address concerns related to examination transparency.
She also criticized the Punjab government, alleging that stronger action should have been taken to prevent recurring examination irregularities. According to her, students preparing for competitive and professional examinations deserve a transparent and fair recruitment and education system.
In addition to her comments on examination-related issues, Maliwal made political allegations regarding an organization she referred to as the "Cockroach Janata Party" (CJP). She claimed that the group had been created and financially supported by individuals associated with Kejriwal and alleged that it conducted paid campaigns on social media. These allegations have been made by Maliwal, and no official evidence supporting the claims was presented during her remarks.
As of the time of publication, the Aam Aadmi Party and Arvind Kejriwal have not issued an official response specifically addressing Maliwal's latest allegations. Their response, if released, may provide the party's position on the issues raised.
Examination integrity has become an important public policy issue across several states in recent years, with governments introducing legal and administrative measures to prevent question paper leaks, impersonation, and other forms of malpractice. The issue has also been the subject of debate in Parliament, where lawmakers have discussed proposals to strengthen laws governing public examinations.
Education experts have consistently emphasized the need for secure examination processes, stronger digital safeguards, timely investigations into alleged irregularities, and strict action against individuals found guilty of examination fraud. They argue that maintaining the credibility of examinations is essential for ensuring equal opportunities for students and recruitment candidates.
The allegations made by Maliwal have added another political dimension to the ongoing national discussion on examination reforms.
