The Trinamool Congress has officially announced the names of four candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, signaling its strategy to strengthen representation in the Upper House of Parliament. The party nominated state minister Babul Supriyo, former West Bengal Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar, senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy, and noted Bengali film actor Koel Mallick as its candidates from West Bengal.
The announcement was made on Friday through the party’s official social media platform, where the leadership expressed confidence in the nominees. The party stated that the selected candidates reflect its commitment to resilience, democratic values, and the protection of citizens’ rights and dignity across India. The statement highlighted the expectation that the candidates would contribute meaningfully to parliamentary discussions and policymaking at the national level.
Babul Supriyo, currently serving as a minister in the West Bengal government, brings significant political experience to the nomination. Having previously served as a Member of Parliament and Union minister, Supriyo has been actively involved in both national and state politics. His administrative experience and familiarity with parliamentary procedures are expected to play a key role in representing the party’s positions in the Rajya Sabha.
Rajeev Kumar, a former Director General of Police of West Bengal, is known for his long career in law enforcement and public administration. His nomination reflects the party’s attempt to include individuals with governance and security expertise in legislative roles. Observers believe his administrative background may contribute to discussions related to internal security, law enforcement reforms, and governance issues.
Senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy is widely recognized for her legal expertise and contributions to constitutional law. Her inclusion signals the party’s emphasis on legal and policy perspectives within parliamentary debates. Legal experts note that experienced lawyers in the Rajya Sabha often play an important role in scrutinizing legislation and contributing to constitutional discussions.
Actor Koel Mallick, a prominent figure in Bengali cinema, represents the cultural and creative community. Her nomination highlights the party’s effort to include voices from the arts and entertainment sector in national policymaking. Political analysts point out that cultural personalities often help broaden representation by bringing perspectives related to creative industries and public outreach.
Rajya Sabha members are elected by Members of the Legislative Assembly through a system of proportional representation using a single transferable vote. With its strong presence in the West Bengal Assembly, the Trinamool Congress is expected to secure these seats comfortably. The nominations also reflect a balance between political leadership, professional expertise, and public recognition.
The announcement comes at a time when political parties across the country are finalizing candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls. These elections are closely watched as they influence legislative dynamics in Parliament, particularly in debates over key national policies and laws.
Party leaders expressed optimism that the nominated candidates would uphold democratic principles and effectively represent the interests of West Bengal and the nation. The upcoming elections are expected to proceed according to the schedule set by the Election Commission of India, with results likely to shape parliamentary alignments in the coming term.
