Neeraj Chopra Qualifies for Diamond League Final Despite Missing Zurich Event
Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has secured his place in the 2026 Diamond League Final despite not competing in the Zurich Diamond League meeting. The two-time Olympic medallist finished the qualification series with 12 points, enough to secure the sixth and final qualifying position in the men's javelin throw.
The Diamond League Final is scheduled to take place in Brussels, Belgium, on September 4 and 5. Chopra's qualification keeps him in contention for another major title at the end of a season in which he has carefully managed his competition schedule.
Chopra competed in only two Diamond League meetings during the qualification period. He began his campaign at the Doha Diamond League on June 19, where he finished fourth with a best throw of 85.69 metres. He later competed at the Lausanne Diamond League on August 21 and produced a much stronger performance with a throw of 88.05 metres.
The Lausanne performance was particularly important for his qualification hopes. Chopra finished second behind Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, with the 88.05-metre effort becoming his season's best mark. Pathirage won the competition with an 88.14-metre throw, finishing just nine centimetres ahead of Chopra.
Chopra then decided not to compete in Zurich on August 27. Despite his absence from the event, his existing points tally was enough to keep him inside the top six after the qualification series concluded. The official Diamond League profile lists his 2026 results as fourth place in Doha and second place in Lausanne, with 88.05 metres remaining his season-best throw.
The qualification system awards points to the top eight finishers in each men's javelin Diamond League meeting. At the end of the qualification series, the six athletes with the highest accumulated totals earn places in the season-ending final. Chopra's 12 points therefore proved sufficient to secure his place in Brussels.
Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage finished at the top of the qualification standings. Pathirage won the Zurich Diamond League with an impressive 92.07-metre throw, taking his total to 39 points. His Zurich performance further strengthened his position as one of the leading javelin throwers of the 2026 season.
The remaining athletes to qualify alongside Pathirage and Chopra were Anderson Peters of Grenada, Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, Curtis Thompson of the United States and Kenya's Julius Yego. Chopra finished sixth with 12 points, while Yego moved to 13 points after finishing fifth in Zurich.
For Chopra, reaching the Diamond League Final is significant because he has returned to international competition after managing his workload and recovering from injury-related issues. His return has gradually gained momentum during the season. The 88.05-metre throw in Lausanne showed that he remains capable of competing at the highest level against a strong international field.
The upcoming final in Brussels will provide another opportunity for Chopra to challenge the world's leading javelin throwers. With only six athletes qualifying for the men's javelin final, the competition is expected to be closely contested.
Chopra's qualification is also notable because he achieved it despite participating in only two qualifying meetings. Rather than relying on a large number of appearances, he made his available opportunities count by finishing fourth in Doha and second in Lausanne.
His season-best 88.05-metre throw in Lausanne will be an important benchmark heading into the final. Chopra has previously crossed the 90-metre mark in his career, with an official personal best of 90.23 metres recorded in Doha in May 2025.
The Diamond League Final will now give Chopra another major opportunity to finish the 2026 season on a high. The presence of Pathirage, Peters, Walcott, Thompson and Yego means Chopra will face a competitive field in Brussels.
With his place already secured, attention will now turn to Chopra's preparation, physical condition and performance on the final stage. His qualification despite missing the Zurich event underlines the value of the points he collected earlier in the season and sets up another important javelin contest in Brussels.
