As a journalist deeply involved with AI, the question of whether AI will take my job often arises. After extensive research and reflection, I’ve concluded that while AI is here to stay, it may or may not take our jobs. What’s certain, though, is that knowing how to effectively use AI will likely position you ahead in the game. AI is a tool – it cannot replace human creativity and judgment but can drastically enhance productivity, especially in tasks like research, writing, and editing.
In 2024, I used several AI tools that have reshaped the way I work:
Perplexity AI: This AI-powered search engine is a game-changer for journalists. It offers real-time data retrieval and provides concise, context-aware answers with citations. I found it particularly useful for complex research and summarizing lengthy articles. It also allows for follow-up questions, creating a conversational research experience that’s essential for staying updated in a fast-paced world.
ChatGPT: Over the last two years, ChatGPT has become my co-editor and assistant. It helps brainstorm story ideas, refine interview questions, and proofread my work. With its ability to analyze data, process large datasets, and even translate languages, it’s a versatile tool for journalists. ChatGPT is also helpful for fact-checking, refining headlines, and creating ledes for social media. Its text-to-image functionality has allowed me to experiment with graphics for stories.
Claude 3.5 Sonnet: Launched by Anthropic, Claude excels at handling large chunks of text. I use it primarily for reading and summarizing documents and research papers. It’s also effective for cleaning transcripts of interviews and brainstorming story ideas. Claude’s advanced AI model is ideal for multi-step reasoning and generating insightful responses in real-time.
Pi Chatbot: Unlike the other AI tools, Pi focuses on emotional well-being. It offers a conversational style that helps manage stress and mental wellness during intense work periods. Pi has become my go-to companion for stress relief and motivation, especially during high-pressure moments.
Meta AI on WhatsApp: Launched in 2024, Meta AI integrates seamlessly with WhatsApp. It’s great for grammar checks, rephrasing sentences, and drafting emails. It’s a fast and efficient assistant for quick tasks on the go, making it perfect for journalists working in mobile environments.
These AI tools have made my workflow more efficient, but it's important to remember that AI is just a tool. The true value lies in how we use it to complement our skills and creativity. In the future, mastering AI could become a key differentiator in various industries, especially in journalism.
Getting Started with AI Tools:
All the AI tools mentioned above are easy to access. Most of them require just an email to create an account, and some offer free versions that provide enough functionality to get started. Whether you’re looking to refine your writing, enhance research, or manage stress, these tools can be invaluable assets in the workplace.
