A new report from OpenAI has revealed usage patterns of ChatGPT across India, showing that Delhi NCR leads in adoption, followed by Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai. The findings highlight how artificial intelligence tools are increasingly being used in major urban centres for work, education, coding, and everyday tasks.

According to the report, the top 10 cities in India account for nearly 50 percent of all ChatGPT users in the country. This indicates a strong concentration of artificial intelligence adoption in major metropolitan regions. Delhi NCR stands out with the highest population penetration of ChatGPT usage in India.

Alongside Delhi NCR, cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai are also emerging as major hubs for AI adoption. These cities are known for their strong presence in technology, education, and startup ecosystems, which may contribute to higher usage of AI tools among professionals and students.

The report also notes that these top cities together represent less than 10 percent of India’s total population. Despite this, they account for a disproportionately large share of AI usage. This suggests that artificial intelligence adoption is currently more concentrated in urban and digitally connected regions.

OpenAI stated that AI adoption in India is approximately three times more concentrated compared to countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, and Germany. This indicates a rapid uptake of AI tools in select Indian cities, particularly where internet access and digital literacy are higher.

ChatGPT is being widely used for a variety of purposes including professional work, academic assistance, programming support, content creation, and personal productivity. The tool has become increasingly popular among students, developers, freelancers, and office workers.

Experts suggest that the growing adoption of AI tools in India reflects the country’s expanding digital ecosystem. The rise of affordable smartphones, improved internet connectivity, and increased awareness of artificial intelligence technologies have contributed to this trend.

Delhi NCR’s leading position can be attributed to its large population base, strong corporate presence, and high concentration of educational institutions. Similarly, Bengaluru and Hyderabad are major technology hubs, while Chennai has a growing IT and engineering ecosystem.

The report highlights a clear urban rural divide in AI usage, with metro cities dominating adoption. However, as digital access expands, smaller cities and rural areas are also expected to see increased usage in the coming years.

Industry observers believe that AI tools like ChatGPT are likely to play an even greater role in India’s digital transformation. From education to business operations, artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming part of daily workflows.

The findings underline the importance of digital infrastructure and education in shaping AI adoption patterns across the country. As technology continues to evolve, usage is expected to spread more evenly across regions.
