Elon Musk’s social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has introduced strict new policies to penalize users posting AI-generated videos related to war without clear disclosure. The move comes amid escalating conflicts in the Middle East, where misinformation and manipulated content pose serious risks to public perception and international discourse.
According to Nikita Bier, head of product at X, the platform’s revised policies include a 90-day suspension for accounts that share AI-created war-related videos without labeling them as artificially generated. Bier emphasized that during crises, users must have access to verified and authentic information to make informed decisions. The policy aims to limit the circulation of content that could mislead audiences or incite panic.
“Today we are revising our Creator Revenue Sharing policies to maintain authenticity of content on Timeline and prevent manipulation of the program,” Bier said. “During times of war, it is critical that people have access to authentic information on the ground. With today’s AI technologies, it is trivial to create content that can mislead people.”
The update is part of a broader effort by X to address the challenges posed by deepfake and AI-generated media, which have become increasingly sophisticated and difficult to detect. War-related videos can have far-reaching consequences, influencing public opinion, international relations, and even financial markets. Platforms like X are under heightened scrutiny to prevent the spread of misleading content, especially during periods of geopolitical tension.
Under the new policy, users posting AI-generated content that is not clearly identified may face account penalties, including a 90-day ban and removal from monetization programs. X has also introduced additional verification measures to encourage content creators to label AI-generated media transparently. The platform hopes that this approach will promote accountability while protecting the integrity of information shared with its global user base.
Digital rights experts have welcomed X’s move as a necessary step to combat disinformation. They note that while AI-generated content has creative and entertainment value, its misuse in sensitive scenarios like armed conflicts can have serious consequences. Clear disclosure policies help maintain trust in digital platforms and reduce the risk of manipulation.
This policy aligns with increasing global calls for regulation of AI-generated content, particularly when it involves public safety, international security, or sensitive political situations. X’s proactive approach seeks to strike a balance between protecting freedom of expression and ensuring that users are not exposed to misleading or potentially harmful content.
As the Middle East crisis continues to dominate headlines, X’s 90-day ban on undisclosed AI war videos is expected to set a precedent for social media platforms worldwide, emphasizing the importance of transparency, responsible content creation, and reliable information during times of conflict.
