Google nearing $5 billion funding support for Anthropic’s Texas AI data centre

Google is reportedly on the verge of securing a multibillion‑dollar agreement to provide financing for a major data centre project in Texas that will be leased to Anthropic, according to industry reports. The facility is expected to require more than $5 billion in funding, with Google’s support anticipated to lower borrowing costs and help attract additional financing from banks and investors. 

The agreement, which is yet to be formally announced, involves Google offering construction loans for the data centre being developed by Nexus Data Centers. The site, covering about 2,800 acres, is planned to deliver roughly 500 megawatts of computing capacity by the end of 2026, with potential future expansion to around 7.7 gigawatts as demand grows. 

The data centre will be used by Anthropic, an AI research and development company known for its Claude family of large language models and advanced AI technologies. Anthropic has positioned itself as a leading competitor in the generative AI space, focusing on safe and responsible AI model deployment. 

Texas has become a focal point for major technology infrastructure investments, partly due to its relatively affordable land, business‑friendly environment and access to energy resources. The location also benefits from proximity to major natural gas pipelines, enabling the facility to utilise its own gas turbine power generation rather than rely entirely on external electric grids. This setup can help control energy costs and ensure stable operations for high‑performance computing workloads. 

Google’s involvement in the project deepens its strategic partnership with Anthropic, which already includes cloud computing support and access to specialised hardware. Google Cloud has previously provided Anthropic with access to its custom tensor processing units (TPUs) to train and run large AI models, reinforcing the technical collaboration between the companies. 

For Google, backing a large‑scale data centre project reflects broader industry trends in which leading technology firms invest heavily in physical infrastructure to support AI research, development and services. The growing demand for computing capacity in artificial intelligence has driven companies to build extensive data centre campuses with custom power and cooling systems to handle the energy and processing needs of advanced workloads. 

Industry observers note that securing long‑term tenants like Anthropic helps justify the high upfront costs of data centre development. With Google’s credit standing, the project is better positioned to obtain favourable financing terms compared to an independent developer seeking funding on its own. 

The collaboration between Google and Anthropic exemplifies how partnerships are forming in the competitive generative AI market, where companies seek to secure both the compute resources and advanced models needed to innovate. As data centres become central to AI deployment, strategic financing and infrastructure development will be critical in meeting future computational demands.

If finalised, the deal will mark one of the largest recent investments directed towards AI infrastructure and is expected to significantly expand capacity for high‑performance artificial intelligence applications.
