As digital adoption grows rapidly across India, AI driven platforms are likely to play an increasingly important role in labour market reforms, skill development, and employment generation initiatives.

Microsoft has joined hands with the Government of India to introduce artificial intelligence powered chatbots on the e-Shram portal and the National Career Service platform, marking a significant step toward the digital transformation of employment services in the country. The announcement was made during a recent Microsoft event in India, where Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence in supporting large scale public services and digital inclusion.

The partnership has been formed with the Ministry of Labour and Employment, which oversees both the e-Shram portal and the National Career Service network. According to the announcement, the AI chatbots will play a key role in assisting workers during the registration process on the e-Shram platform. The system will guide users step by step, answer queries in real time, and reduce dependence on manual assistance. This is expected to benefit millions of workers, particularly those from unorganised sectors who may not be fully familiar with digital platforms.

In addition to registration support, the AI chatbots will help job seekers create professional resumes for use on the National Career Service portal. Resume building remains a challenge for many first time job seekers and workers from rural and semi urban areas. By using artificial intelligence, the platform will be able to generate structured resumes based on user inputs such as education, skills, and work experience. This is expected to improve employment matching and increase job visibility for candidates.

The e-Shram portal is a national database of unorganised workers and includes migrant labourers, construction workers, gig workers, and domestic staff. The platform plays a crucial role in enabling access to social security schemes and welfare benefits. With the introduction of AI chatbots, the government aims to improve the efficiency of the portal and ensure that workers can complete registrations and access services without technical hurdles.

The National Career Service platform connects job seekers with employers and training providers across India. It serves as a central employment exchange and supports job matching, career counselling, and skill development. The inclusion of AI based tools is expected to enhance user experience and speed up the recruitment process by improving data accuracy and accessibility.

Speaking at the event, Satya Nadella emphasised that artificial intelligence can help governments reach citizens at scale and improve service delivery in areas such as employment, education, and healthcare. He noted that responsible deployment of AI can strengthen digital public infrastructure and help bridge the gap between citizens and essential services.

Officials from the Ministry of Labour and Employment stated that the introduction of AI chatbots aligns with the government’s broader Digital India vision. The project is aimed at making employment services more accessible, especially for workers in remote regions who may lack access to physical employment offices.

The rollout of the AI chatbots is expected to take place in phases. During the initial phase, the chatbots will focus on registration assistance and resume creation. Additional features may be added in future based on user feedback and system performance. The system will also support multiple Indian languages to improve accessibility.

Experts believe that this collaboration between Microsoft and the Indian government represents a major step in applying artificial intelligence for governance and public welfare. As digital adoption grows rapidly across India, AI driven platforms are likely to play an increasingly important role in labour market reforms, skill development, and employment generation initiatives.
