Altman, who has led OpenAI through the rapid growth of generative AI models, stressed that while ChatGPT represents a major advancement in technology, it is not a flawless source of truth.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has issued a public caution to users, advising them not to place complete trust in ChatGPT or similar AI tools for critical information or decisions. The statement was made as part of a broader conversation about the evolving capabilities and limitations of artificial intelligence.

Altman, who has led OpenAI through the rapid growth of generative AI models, stressed that while ChatGPT represents a major advancement in technology, it is not a flawless source of truth. He pointed out that the AI can sometimes produce answers that are incorrect, incomplete, or biased due to the limitations of its training data and the current state of the technology.

“ChatGPT is useful and impressive, but it still makes mistakes,” Altman said. “Users should not rely on it for anything serious without verifying the information through other trusted sources.”

The warning comes at a time when the use of generative AI tools is expanding across industries such as healthcare, law, education, finance, and media. As AI becomes more integrated into daily tasks, concerns have grown about overdependence and misuse, especially when users assume that the information provided by AI models is always accurate or authoritative.

Altman explained that ChatGPT is trained on a wide range of publicly available internet data, books, and articles, but it does not have the capacity to understand real-time context or confirm facts independently. Its outputs are predictions based on language patterns, not grounded in a live database or factual verification system.

He also emphasized that transparency about the model's limitations is important for promoting responsible use. OpenAI has consistently provided disclaimers on ChatGPT’s interface, warning users that the tool may produce inaccurate information and should not be considered a substitute for professional advice.

Technology experts have welcomed Altman’s comments, noting that increased awareness among users is essential as AI tools become more widely adopted. Many have echoed the need for AI literacy so that individuals can use these tools effectively without being misled by incorrect responses.

In particular, Altman cautioned against using ChatGPT for decisions in sensitive areas such as medical diagnosis, legal guidance, and financial planning. “We want people to think of AI as an assistant, not a decision-maker,” he said. “It can support human judgment, but it should not replace it.”

OpenAI continues to develop safety features and content filters to minimize the risks of misinformation, bias, or misuse. The company is also encouraging developers and partners to build applications that include human oversight and mechanisms for fact-checking.

As the technology evolves, OpenAI remains focused on improving the reliability and transparency of its AI systems. Altman concluded by saying that while AI can be a powerful tool for learning, creativity, and productivity, users must remain thoughtful and critical when using it in real-world contexts.
