OpenAI is in advanced discussions to raise $6.5 billion from investors, aiming to boost its valuation to $150 billion. This new valuation represents a significant increase from the company's previous $86 billion valuation from earlier in the year. The updated valuation highlights OpenAI’s position as one of the most valuable startups globally.
In addition to equity funding, OpenAI is also negotiating a $5 billion revolving credit facility with banks. Thrive Capital is expected to lead this funding round, with notable investors including Microsoft, Apple, and Nvidia potentially involved. Microsoft, OpenAI’s largest investor, is confirmed to participate, while Apple and Nvidia are still in discussions.
This approach aligns with a trend seen among major tech startups, which often secure revolving credit facilities from Wall Street banks as part of their pre-IPO strategies. Such moves can help strengthen banking relationships and potentially lead to favorable terms on future financing.
Founded in 2015, OpenAI has become a central figure in the AI sector, particularly following the launch of its widely acclaimed chatbot, ChatGPT, in 2022. The company’s advancements in AI technology, including tools for generating realistic images and human-like text, have attracted significant investor interest.
The company has undergone substantial changes since its inception, including a brief period without CEO Sam Altman last year. The current focus is on bolstering computing capabilities and operational expenses with the new funding. Additionally, OpenAI plans to allow employees to sell some of their shares in a tender offer later this year.
