With daily campaign budgets beginning at Rs 725, the platform is expected to be available to businesses of different sizes, potentially making ChatGPT a new destination for digital advertising in India.

OpenAI has launched its ChatGPT advertising programme in India, marking a significant expansion of the company’s advertising business in one of its largest markets. The rollout means eligible logged in adult users on the Free and Go plans may now see sponsored advertisements within the ChatGPT experience.

The company has said that users on Plus and Pro plans will continue to receive an ad free experience. Business, Enterprise and Education plans are also listed as ad free. OpenAI has also stated that advertisements are not shown to accounts identified as belonging to users under the age of 18.

The India launch is expected to bring more than 50 brands onto the platform during the initial rollout. OpenAI has partnered with advertising agencies WPP and Omnicom as its first agency partners in the Indian market. The partnerships are intended to support advertisers with areas such as campaign strategy, creative development, measurement and brand safety. OpenAI has described these agency partnerships as non exclusive.

The company is positioning ChatGPT advertising as different from traditional search advertising. Instead of relying only on keyword searches, the advertising system can consider the context of a user’s current conversation and whether the user is displaying commercial intent.

For example, when a user is researching products, comparing services or considering a purchase, an eligible advertisement may be displayed below the ChatGPT response. OpenAI says advertisements are separately labelled and are not integrated into the generated answer.

This distinction is important because OpenAI says advertisements do not influence the answers generated by ChatGPT. The company has also stated that advertisers do not receive users’ conversation text, chat history, memories or personal details. Instead, advertisers can receive aggregated campaign performance information such as impressions, clicks, click through rates and conversions.

The introduction of advertisements represents a new business model for ChatGPT in India. Advertising revenue could help support the continued availability of free and lower cost access to the company's AI services while OpenAI continues to invest in computing infrastructure and product development.

India is an important market for ChatGPT because of its large technology user base and growing interest in artificial intelligence. OpenAI has previously highlighted the scale of its Indian user community, making the country an important market for both consumer and business products.

The advertising rollout also creates a new opportunity for Indian businesses. From September 4, companies will be able to access the self serve ChatGPT Ads Manager. This will allow businesses to create and manage advertising campaigns without necessarily relying entirely on advertising agencies.

The minimum daily campaign budget is expected to start at Rs 725. This could make the platform accessible to smaller businesses as well as larger companies with substantial advertising budgets. The introduction of a self serve system is particularly significant for India's large number of small and medium sized businesses.

OpenAI expects early advertiser interest from several sectors, including travel, financial services, retail, health and beauty. The company is attempting to position ChatGPT as a place where brands can reach consumers while they are actively researching and making decisions.

The advertising format is designed to appear separately from the main ChatGPT response. According to OpenAI's documentation, ads can include the advertiser's name, headline, description, landing page and other creative elements. This separation is intended to make it clear that sponsored content is different from the AI generated answer.

The move also comes as technology companies increasingly explore ways to generate revenue from artificial intelligence services. Running large AI systems requires substantial computing resources, including data centre capacity, specialised processors and electricity. Advertising provides another potential revenue stream alongside subscriptions and business services.

However, the introduction of advertising also raises questions about user experience and privacy. OpenAI says its advertising system is designed to keep advertisements separate from ChatGPT responses and prevent advertisers from accessing private conversations. Users can also have controls over advertising in supported regions.

OpenAI's Help Center states that users on the ad supported Free experience may have access to controls related to advertisements, including options concerning ad personalisation. Users can also hide or report individual advertisements when those controls are available.

The company has stressed that advertisements are paid placements and do not represent an endorsement or recommendation by OpenAI. This distinction is intended to prevent users from confusing sponsored content with information generated by ChatGPT.

The India rollout follows earlier advertising tests and launches in other markets. OpenAI had previously announced that its advertising pilot was aimed at supporting broader access to ChatGPT while maintaining user control and privacy. The company subsequently expanded the programme to additional countries before bringing it to India.

The introduction of ChatGPT Ads could also change the digital advertising market in India. Traditional advertising platforms largely rely on search keywords, social media behaviour, websites and other signals to reach potential customers. ChatGPT offers a different environment because users often describe their requirements in natural language and ask follow up questions before making decisions.

For advertisers, this could provide an opportunity to reach consumers at a stage when they are actively considering a product or service. However, the effectiveness of the new format will depend on user acceptance, advertising relevance and the ability of businesses to convert interest into measurable results.

For consumers, the main change will be the possibility of seeing clearly labelled sponsored content alongside their ChatGPT experience if they use eligible plans. Paid subscribers on the plans that remain ad free will not see these advertisements.

OpenAI's decision to launch advertisements in India therefore represents both a technology and business development. The company is expanding the ways in which brands can reach consumers while continuing to offer free and lower cost access to its AI platform.

More than 50 brands are expected to participate in the initial Indian rollout, while WPP and Omnicom will serve as the first major agency partners. The self serve advertising platform scheduled for September 4 is expected to broaden participation further by allowing businesses to manage their campaigns directly.

The launch will likely be closely watched by advertisers, technology companies and consumers as the market adjusts to advertising within AI powered conversational services. The long term impact will depend on how users respond to sponsored content and whether businesses find ChatGPT an effective channel for reaching customers.

For now, OpenAI's India strategy combines advertising access for eligible Free and Go users with an ad free experience for higher tier plans. The company says its objective is to generate advertising revenue while keeping advertisements separate from ChatGPT's answers and protecting users' private conversations from advertisers.

The September 4 opening of the self serve Ads Manager will be the next major step in the rollout. With daily campaign budgets beginning at Rs 725, the platform is expected to be available to businesses of different sizes, potentially making ChatGPT a new destination for digital advertising in India.
