The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization behind Wikipedia, has unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI) strategy titled ‘Human-First’, aimed at enhancing the work of volunteer editors rather than replacing them. This announcement marks a significant shift in how the world’s largest online encyclopedia plans to integrate emerging AI technologies.
Unlike many platforms that have embraced full automation, Wikipedia’s approach is focused on augmentation—providing AI tools that support human decision-making while preserving editorial integrity.
Why 'Human-First'?
The new strategy is designed to uphold Wikipedia’s foundational principles of neutrality, transparency, and open collaboration. The Wikimedia Foundation emphasized that AI tools will be introduced only to assist with tasks such as grammar checks, identifying biased language, suggesting citations, and monitoring content vandalism. However, the final decisions about what appears on the platform will remain with human volunteers.
Selena Deckelmann, Chief Product and Technology Officer at the Wikimedia Foundation, stated that the organization’s goal is not to replace editors but to make their contributions easier, more efficient, and more accurate. "Our focus is on creating responsible AI tools that help reduce the workload on editors, not override their decisions," she explained.
How the AI Tools Will Work
The AI system will be designed to:
Suggest edits or sources based on existing content gaps
Detect and flag potential misinformation or biased phrasing.
Assist in cross-language article translation.
Monitor for persistent vandalism or abusive edits.
Importantly, these tools will not make any changes on their own. All AI-generated suggestions must be reviewed and approved by human editors before being published.
Editor Community Involvement
The Wikimedia Foundation has been working closely with its global community of volunteer editors to shape this new strategy. Multiple rounds of feedback were taken to ensure that AI tools align with the needs and expectations of users who contribute to and moderate Wikipedia daily.
Many editors have expressed cautious optimism, noting that the tools could help reduce the burden of maintaining the vast platform, especially on smaller language editions that lack sufficient contributors.
Balancing Technology and Trust
Wikipedia's AI approach contrasts sharply with those of commercial tech platforms, many of which are rapidly incorporating generative AI in content creation. The Wikimedia Foundation has stressed that the platform’s credibility depends on its community-driven nature, and AI must be used responsibly to preserve public trust.
The foundation has also committed to making the AI systems open source and auditable, ensuring that users and developers can understand how decisions are made and provide accountability.
Future Plans
The rollout of AI tools will begin in a phased manner over the coming year. Priority will be given to regions and language editions where editor participation is low, with the aim of supporting underserved communities.
The strategy is part of a broader vision to keep Wikipedia a reliable, transparent, and collaborative knowledge resource in the AI era, ensuring that human judgment remains central to the editorial process.
