Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced the rollout of its much-anticipated 5G services in India. Initially available in select regions, the launch marks BSNL’s entry into the next generation of mobile connectivity. As part of its nationwide expansion plan, BSNL is offering free 5G upgrades to its existing users with compatible smartphones.
This development is expected to improve network speeds, enhance user experience, and boost digital inclusion, especially in semi-urban and rural areas where BSNL already has a wide presence. The 5G launch by BSNL comes at a time when private telecom operators have already established significant coverage, making BSNL’s entry crucial for competitive pricing and broader accessibility.
According to BSNL officials, the 5G upgrade will be available at no extra cost for current prepaid and postpaid users. Customers with 4G SIM cards and 5G-enabled smartphones will be able to access 5G services without changing their number or SIM card in most cases.
To simplify the process, BSNL has issued a step-by-step guide for activating 5G services:
Step 1: Ensure your smartphone is 5G-compatible and updated with the latest system software.
Step 2: Confirm that your device supports the 5G bands used by BSNL in your area.
Step 3: Go to the settings menu on your phone and enable 5G in the mobile network section.
Step 4: Visit the nearest BSNL customer service centre or use the official mobile app to check 5G availability in your region.
Step 5: Restart your device to initiate the 5G connection.
Once activated, users will notice a significant improvement in data download and upload speeds, along with smoother streaming and improved performance for online gaming and video calls.
BSNL has also stated that it will continue to offer affordable data plans under its 5G services, keeping in line with its goal of making digital services accessible to every Indian citizen. Users can expect more details about tariff plans and regional availability in the coming weeks.
The 5G network is being deployed in phases, starting with metropolitan cities and gradually moving to Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns. BSNL is leveraging both indigenous and global technology partners to roll out its 5G infrastructure while ensuring compliance with government standards for security and performance.
Industry experts believe that BSNL’s entry into the 5G space will strengthen the country’s digital ecosystem by encouraging innovation and creating more affordable options for users. This launch also aligns with India’s broader push for digital transformation under government initiatives such as Digital India and BharatNet.
BSNL customers are encouraged to follow official updates through the BSNL website or mobile app to check for 5G availability in their region and access customer support during the upgrade process.
