The Indian government has intensified its crackdown on illegal digital lending platforms by blocking 87 unauthorised loan applications for serious violations including data misuse, harassment, and financial fraud.

The Indian government has intensified its crackdown on illegal digital lending platforms by blocking 87 unauthorised loan applications for serious violations including data misuse, harassment, and financial fraud. The action was taken following a directive from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, in coordination with cybersecurity agencies and law enforcement authorities.

Officials revealed that these apps were found to be operating without proper regulatory clearances and were involved in unethical lending practices. Several of the blocked platforms allegedly collected excessive personal data from users, including access to contacts, photos, and location information, which was later misused for intimidation and public shaming during loan recovery.

The digital lending sector in India has seen rapid growth in recent years due to easy smartphone access and rising demand for instant credit. However, this surge has also led to the rise of unregistered loan apps exploiting vulnerable borrowers by offering quick loans at extremely high interest rates. In many cases, borrowers were trapped in a cycle of debt due to hidden charges, short repayment windows, and aggressive recovery methods.

Government officials stated that multiple complaints were received from across the country regarding mental harassment, financial distress, and even suicide-linked cases due to the pressure exerted by illegal recovery agents. Investigations revealed that several of these apps had foreign links and were routing funds through complex digital payment structures to evade detection.

The blocking of these apps is part of a larger nationwide initiative to create safer digital ecosystems. Authorities have been working closely with app stores, internet service providers, and financial regulators to identify non-compliant lending platforms and take prompt action. The Reserve Bank of India has also issued strict digital lending guidelines mandating transparency, data protection, and fair recovery practices for all regulated lenders.

Officials clarified that customers should always verify whether a loan app is registered with the RBI or partnered with a regulated financial institution before availing any credit service. Users are also advised to avoid granting unnecessary app permissions and to immediately report suspicious platforms to cybercrime authorities.

Experts believe the government’s decisive action will restore trust in the digital lending ecosystem and create a level playing field for legitimate fintech companies. It also sends a strong message that misuse of personal data and financial exploitation will not be tolerated.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology reiterated that further surveillance and enforcement actions are underway, and more illegal apps could face similar action in the coming weeks. The government is also exploring stronger legal frameworks to ensure better consumer protection in the rapidly evolving fintech space.

With digital financial services becoming an essential part of everyday life, authorities emphasized that public awareness, regulatory compliance, and technological safeguards must go hand in hand to prevent fraud and protect citizens from cyber exploitation.
