Major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and other digital applications have been asked to ensure strict compliance with existing information technology laws and guidelines.

The Indian government has stepped up its regulatory stance on social media platforms by issuing a strong warning against the spread of obscene and vulgar content. Major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and other digital applications have been asked to ensure strict compliance with existing information technology laws and guidelines.

Officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology emphasised that social media intermediaries are legally obligated to prevent the circulation of content that violates Indian laws, including material deemed obscene, sexually explicit, or harmful to children. The warning comes amid rising complaints from users, civil society groups, and lawmakers regarding the unchecked spread of inappropriate videos, reels, and images across popular platforms.

Under the Information Technology Rules, 2021, social media companies are required to deploy robust grievance redressal mechanisms, appoint compliance officers, and act promptly on user complaints. Authorities highlighted that platforms must remove flagged content within stipulated timelines and ensure greater transparency in their moderation processes. Special emphasis was placed on safeguarding minors from exposure to harmful digital material.

The government also cautioned that failure to adhere to these rules could lead to serious consequences. These include financial penalties, legal action, and the possible withdrawal of intermediary status, which currently shields platforms from liability for user-generated content. Without this protection, companies could be held directly responsible for unlawful content hosted on their services.

This warning is part of a broader push by the government to make the digital ecosystem safer and more accountable. Over the past few years, India has witnessed rapid growth in social media usage, accompanied by concerns over misinformation, cyber abuse, and inappropriate content. Regulators argue that with increased reach and influence comes greater responsibility for tech companies operating in the country.

Social media firms have stated that they are investing in advanced artificial intelligence tools and human moderation teams to detect and remove prohibited content. However, officials believe these efforts need to be scaled up further to match the volume and speed at which harmful material spreads online. The government has urged platforms to proactively monitor content rather than relying solely on user reports.

Experts note that India’s approach reflects a global trend where governments are tightening oversight of digital platforms. Balancing freedom of expression with user safety remains a key challenge. The latest warning signals that authorities expect stronger cooperation from tech companies to ensure that online spaces adhere to legal and ethical standards.

As discussions between regulators and platform representatives continue, the government has made it clear that compliance is not optional. The focus, officials said, is on protecting users, maintaining public decency, and ensuring that social media platforms operate responsibly within India’s legal framework.
