In the U.S., the company is facing multiple lawsuits alleging it failed to protect young users from harmful content, while the European Union has tightened digital safety norms under the Digital Services Act (DSA) .

Tech Desk | Global:

In a major policy shift, Meta Platforms Inc. has announced the expansion of its teen-focused safety features—initially launched on Instagram—to Facebook and Messenger. This decision comes amid growing legal and regulatory pressure from governments and watchdogs around the world, questioning the tech giant’s responsibility in ensuring the safety of its underage users.

The new safety tools are designed to create a safer and more controlled digital environment for teenagers, addressing concerns around exposure to inappropriate content, online harassment, and digital addiction. The features will include enhanced privacy controls, stricter messaging limits, content filtering, and real-time alerts to detect harmful behavior.

🔒 Key Features Now Rolling Out:

Stricter Privacy Defaults: Teen accounts will now default to more private settings, limiting who can view their profiles or interact with them.

Message Request Restrictions: Unknown adults will be restricted from sending message requests to teenagers.

Safety Alerts: Real-time notifications will alert teens if suspicious accounts attempt to contact them.

Parental Supervision Tools: Parents can monitor usage, set time limits, and receive updates on account activity through the Meta Family Center.

Activity Nudges: Prompts will encourage teens to take breaks or rethink certain interactions.

These features have already seen positive feedback on Instagram, and Meta hopes to replicate that success across its other major platforms. The company said in a statement that this is part of its “ongoing commitment to youth well-being online.”

 Legal and Regulatory Pressure:

Meta’s move follows intense scrutiny in the U.S., Europe, and India, where governments are cracking down on online safety practices, especially those affecting children and teenagers. In the U.S., the company is facing multiple lawsuits alleging it failed to protect young users from harmful content, while the European Union has tightened digital safety norms under the Digital Services Act (DSA).

In India, child rights bodies have also raised concerns about social media addiction, cyberbullying, and exposure to harmful trends. Meta’s policy update is being seen as a proactive step to align with global digital safety expectations.

 Looking Ahead:

With over 3 billion monthly active users across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, Meta’s new safeguards could have a significant impact on digital child safety standards worldwide. The tech giant has indicated that more tools are in development, including AI-powered content moderation systems and advanced parental dashboards.

As governments and users alike demand greater accountability from Big Tech, Meta’s updates mark a crucial step in redefining how platforms can create a safer digital space for younger generations.
