New Delhi:

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has officially launched the e-Zero FIR facility in Delhi, marking a significant step toward enhancing the country’s cybercrime reporting and response infrastructure. This digital initiative allows for the automatic registration of cybercrime cases without the need for victims to visit a police station in person.

The launch is part of the government’s broader efforts to modernize law enforcement mechanisms and provide swift access to justice, especially in technology-related offenses. Under this system, individuals can file complaints regarding cybercrime incidents such as online financial fraud, cyberstalking, identity theft, and other digital threats through an online portal. Once submitted, the complaint is automatically converted into a Zero FIR, ensuring that the case is formally registered and directed to the appropriate jurisdiction for further action.

A Zero FIR allows any police station to register a complaint regardless of where the incident took place. The concept is particularly useful in cybercrime cases where jurisdictional boundaries are often blurred due to the virtual nature of offenses. By digitizing this process, the e-Zero FIR mechanism aims to eliminate delays, improve transparency, and ensure faster responses.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while announcing the launch, stated that the initiative is part of the Cyber Safe India campaign, which aims to create a robust framework for cyber law enforcement. “Cybercrime affects people across regions and social groups. Through e-Zero FIR, we are empowering citizens to report offenses easily and securely, thereby improving access to justice,” he said.

Delhi Police officials have welcomed the move, saying it will help reduce the burden on physical police stations while allowing for quicker redressal of complaints. A special cybercrime unit has been set up to process these online FIRs and ensure they are directed to the correct investigation teams. Additionally, a dedicated helpdesk and guidance system will support victims in navigating the reporting process.

The system will be integrated with the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in), which already serves as the primary platform for cybercrime complaints in India. Through this integration, the complaints filed on the portal will be automatically converted into FIRs in Delhi under the e-Zero FIR model.

Cybersecurity experts have lauded the move, noting that early registration of complaints is crucial in preventing financial loss and tracing digital trails. The system is expected to not only help individual victims but also assist law enforcement in identifying patterns and clusters of cybercriminal activity.

However, officials have emphasized the need for public awareness. Many victims do not report cybercrimes due to fear, hesitation, or lack of knowledge. The government plans to roll out a digital campaign and awareness drives to educate people on how to use the e-Zero FIR system effectively.

With cybercrimes on the rise, especially in metropolitan areas, the MHA’s e-Zero FIR launch in Delhi is seen as a major step toward a smarter and more citizen-centric policing model. Plans are already underway to extend the system to other states in the coming months.
