Starlink, the satellite-based internet service operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, is preparing for its much-anticipated launch in India. Designed to deliver high-speed broadband connectivity through a network of low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites, Starlink promises to revolutionize internet access, especially in remote and underserved regions of the country.
Expected Launch Date and Status
The official launch date for Starlink in India has not been confirmed yet. However, sources suggest that the company is targeting late 2025, depending on regulatory clearances. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe) are currently evaluating Starlink’s proposal. Until the required approvals are granted, commercial rollout remains on hold.
Starlink had previously opened pre-orders in India and even received over 5,000 registrations. However, due to the lack of a necessary license, the government instructed the company to halt those operations temporarily.
Internet Speed and Performance
Starlink promises to deliver broadband speeds ranging from 50 Mbps to 250 Mbps for individual users. In areas with strong satellite coverage, speeds could exceed 300 Mbps, especially for business or premium users. Latency is expected to remain below 50 milliseconds, making it suitable for activities like video calls, online gaming, and high-definition streaming.
This level of performance is significant in a country like India, where many regions still suffer from poor or no internet access. Starlink’s goal is to bridge the digital divide between cities and rural areas by offering reliable internet without depending on ground-based infrastructure.
Pricing and Subscription Plans
Although official pricing has not been released for India, Starlink’s global standard plan costs around USD 110 per month (approximately ₹9,000), with an initial hardware cost of USD 599 (around ₹50,000). If similar pricing is applied in India, Starlink may target enterprise customers or consumers in remote regions where alternatives are limited.
There are also expectations that Starlink may introduce India-specific pricing to remain competitive in a price-sensitive market. Some reports suggest that affordable rural packages may be introduced later as the service scales.
Availability and Service Coverage
Starlink aims to provide nationwide coverage, including areas where fibre-optic or 4G/5G networks are not viable. This includes remote villages, mountainous regions, deserts, and islands. Initially, coverage may be rolled out in phases, prioritising areas with the least connectivity.
The company has indicated that it will work with local partners for logistics, installation, and maintenance. Discussions are ongoing with various Indian telecom and infrastructure companies to support deployment.
Regulatory Hurdles and Progress
One of the primary challenges for Starlink in India is securing a global mobile personal communication by satellite (GMPCS) license. The regulatory landscape for satellite internet in India is still evolving. The Indian government is also formulating policies for spectrum allocation and data security for such services.
Once these concerns are addressed, Starlink is expected to begin its rollout. With the backing of SpaceX and growing global demand for LEO satellite internet, India could become a significant market for the company.
