UPI Services Face Major Outage: Users Report Issues With Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay

The disruption, which began in the early afternoon, triggered a flurry of complaints on social media platforms as users expressed concern and frustration over failed or delayed digital payments.

Several popular UPI-based payment apps, including Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay, and others, experienced a widespread technical outage on Friday, leaving users unable to complete transactions for several hours. The disruption, which began in the early afternoon, triggered a flurry of complaints on social media platforms as users expressed concern and frustration over failed or delayed digital payments.

The outage affected both peer-to-peer transactions and merchant payments, disrupting regular business activities, especially for small vendors and customers who rely heavily on cashless transactions.

While the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) — the governing body for UPI services — has yet to issue an official statement, sources suggest that the issue may have originated from a backend synchronization error or system overload. UPI, which processes over 10 billion transactions per month, relies on a complex network of banking and technical infrastructure. A disruption in any one part of this chain can impact the entire ecosystem.

Users reported that the apps were either not loading, showing "transaction failed" messages, or stuck at the processing screen. Some users also mentioned they were debited but not credited, causing panic over potential financial losses. However, banking experts have advised that such transactions are usually auto-reversed within 24–48 hours.

Digital payment giants like Paytm and PhonePe acknowledged the issue on their official social media handles. Paytm tweeted, "We are experiencing a temporary technical issue affecting UPI transactions. Our teams are working on resolving it at the earliest. Thank you for your patience."

PhonePe also issued a similar statement, assuring users that no funds were lost and services would be restored shortly. Meanwhile, Google Pay has yet to officially respond, although many users tagged the platform in their complaints online.

The incident has reignited conversations around the over-reliance on digital payment platforms and the need for stronger fail-safe mechanisms. Financial experts have emphasized the importance of having multiple payment options, including cards or cash, especially during critical hours or emergencies.

As of now, partial services have resumed for some users, but full restoration is expected later in the evening. The NPCI is also likely to review the incident and work with partner banks and app providers to ensure such outages are minimized in the future.
