WhatsApp, the Meta-owned messaging platform, has introduced a new security feature named Strict Account Settings to provide enhanced protection for users at risk of targeted digital threats.

WhatsApp, the Meta-owned messaging platform, has introduced a new security feature named Strict Account Settings to provide enhanced protection for users at risk of targeted digital threats. Described as a “lockdown-style” option, the feature consolidates multiple safety settings into one simple toggle, allowing users to limit how unknown contacts can interact with their account. This step is aimed at individuals who may face sophisticated cyberattacks or privacy threats.

The new feature will be available globally in the coming weeks, according to WhatsApp’s official blog post. While the platform already offers end-to-end encryption by default, the Strict Account Settings provide an additional layer of security for users seeking more control over their account interactions. By enabling this feature, users can restrict messages, calls, and other contact attempts from people who are not in their contact list, reducing exposure to potential threats.

Meta has positioned this feature alongside other high-security modes offered by major tech companies. Apple introduced Lockdown Mode in 2022, which enhances iPhone security against targeted attacks, and Google followed with Advanced Protection Mode for Android users with heightened security requirements. WhatsApp’s addition reflects growing attention to digital safety for individuals vulnerable to sophisticated cyber threats, including journalists, activists, and public figures.

The rollout of Strict Account Settings comes at a time when online harassment, phishing attempts, and malware campaigns are becoming increasingly sophisticated. WhatsApp emphasizes that this new setting is optional, allowing users to decide if they want the added restrictions. Once activated, the account operates under stricter rules, limiting interactions and access to sensitive information.

To enable Strict Account Settings, users should update to the latest version of WhatsApp when the feature becomes available. The toggle is expected to be visible under the Privacy or Security settings menu. Once switched on, it automatically enforces restrictions on unknown contacts while retaining the normal functionality for trusted contacts.

Experts suggest that while this feature adds a strong layer of protection, users should also continue practicing general cybersecurity hygiene, such as avoiding suspicious links, regularly updating their app, and reviewing privacy settings. WhatsApp notes that the feature is particularly valuable for high-risk users who are more likely to be targeted by attackers exploiting messaging platforms.

With the introduction of Strict Account Settings, WhatsApp strengthens its commitment to user security and privacy, joining global tech companies in offering proactive tools to combat evolving digital threats. This development underlines the growing importance of high-security modes in everyday communication apps.
