Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Chief Mohan Bhagwat on Tuesday unveiled a statue of freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar in Sri Vijaya Puram, located in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The unveiling ceremony was held as part of efforts to commemorate India’s freedom struggle and recognize leaders who played significant roles during the colonial period.
Veer Savarkar is closely associated with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands due to his imprisonment at the Cellular Jail, where he spent several years during British rule. The jail, often referred to as Kala Pani, stands as a symbol of the hardships faced by freedom fighters. The installation of the statue near this historic region is intended to highlight Savarkar’s life, ideology, and sacrifices.
During the event, Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid tribute to Savarkar’s contribution to the independence movement, describing him as a prominent revolutionary thinker and nationalist leader. He noted that Savarkar endured severe hardships while imprisoned and continued to inspire the freedom movement through his writings and ideas. Shah emphasized the importance of remembering all freedom fighters who contributed to India’s independence in different ways.
RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat also addressed the gathering and spoke about Savarkar’s role in shaping nationalist thought during a critical phase of India’s history. He highlighted Savarkar’s influence on youth movements and his efforts to promote social unity and national identity. Bhagwat stated that honoring historical figures helps society understand its past and draw inspiration for the future.
The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, local administrators, representatives of cultural organizations, and members of the public. Security arrangements were in place, and the event proceeded smoothly under official supervision.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been increasingly recognized as an important site in India’s freedom struggle narrative, with renewed focus on preserving and promoting historical landmarks. In recent years, several initiatives have been undertaken to develop memorials and improve public awareness of the islands’ role during the independence movement.
The unveiling of the statue is seen as part of broader efforts to document and present India’s freedom history in a comprehensive manner. Supporters view the move as a step toward acknowledging lesser-highlighted aspects of the independence struggle, while also strengthening historical education.
The statue of Veer Savarkar is expected to become a point of interest for visitors and students, contributing to the cultural and historical landscape of Sri Vijaya Puram. Officials stated that such initiatives aim to ensure that future generations remain connected to the nation’s history and the sacrifices made to achieve independence.
