The Indian Army observed Vijay Diwas in Chandigarh by paying homage to Param Vir Chakra awardee Arun Khetarpal, a celebrated hero of the 1971 Indo-Pak war. The event was held to commemorate his exceptional courage and sacrifice during the Battle of Basantar, one of the key engagements of the conflict.
Senior officers of the Indian Army, war veterans, and representatives from civil administration participated in the ceremony. Floral wreaths were laid at the memorial dedicated to Arun Khetarpal, and a guard of honour was presented as a mark of respect. The gathering reflected the armed forces’ commitment to remembering the contributions of soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation.
Arun Khetarpal was commissioned into the Indian Army’s armoured corps and played a crucial role during the Battle of Basantar in December 1971. Despite sustaining injuries and facing intense enemy fire, he continued to engage enemy tanks, contributing significantly to the success of Indian forces in the sector. His actions during the battle demonstrated exceptional bravery and leadership, for which he was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award.
Speakers at the event emphasized the importance of Vijay Diwas as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the armed forces. They highlighted how stories of courage such as that of Arun Khetarpal continue to inspire present and future generations of soldiers. Army officials also stressed the need to preserve historical accounts of the 1971 war to ensure that the legacy of bravery remains alive.
Vijay Diwas is observed every year on December 16 to mark India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. Across the country, commemorative events are organized by the armed forces to honour fallen soldiers and celebrate the spirit of service and sacrifice.
In Chandigarh, the tribute ceremony concluded with a moment of silence in honour of all soldiers who lost their lives during the war. The Indian Army reiterated its commitment to upholding the values of duty, honour, and courage exemplified by heroes like Arun Khetarpal.
