Adani Defence and Aerospace has entered into a strategic partnership with Italian aerospace major Leonardo to establish a comprehensive helicopter manufacturing and support ecosystem in India. The collaboration marks a significant step in strengthening India’s defence self-reliance and reducing dependence on imports in the rotary-wing aircraft segment.
Under the partnership, both companies will focus on addressing the operational requirements of the Indian armed forces, with particular emphasis on Leonardo’s military helicopter platforms such as the AW169M and AW109 TrekkerM. These helicopters are designed for a range of missions including reconnaissance, transport, training, and utility operations, making them suitable for India’s diverse defence needs.
A key element of the collaboration is phased indigenisation. This approach will gradually increase the level of local manufacturing and sourcing of components in India. Over time, the programme aims to develop domestic capabilities across the helicopter value chain, including assembly, component manufacturing, testing, and certification.
The partnership also includes plans to establish maintenance, repair, and overhaul facilities within India. These facilities are expected to support both current and future helicopter fleets operated by the Indian military and other government agencies. Local MRO capabilities will reduce turnaround time, lower lifecycle costs, and improve operational readiness.
In addition to manufacturing and maintenance, the initiative will focus on building pilot training and technical skill development infrastructure. This is expected to create a pool of trained personnel capable of supporting advanced helicopter operations and sustainment. The training ecosystem is also likely to generate employment and contribute to the growth of India’s aerospace workforce.
Adani Defence and Aerospace, the defence and aerospace arm of Adani Enterprises Limited, will leverage its existing industrial infrastructure and experience in defence manufacturing. The company has been expanding its footprint across multiple segments, including unmanned systems, ammunition, and aerospace components.
Leonardo, on the other hand, brings decades of global experience in helicopter design, engineering, and production. The company’s rotary-wing platforms are used by armed forces and civil operators in several countries. Through this partnership, Leonardo aims to deepen its engagement with India’s defence sector and support local capability development.
The initiative aligns closely with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, which encourages domestic production of defence equipment and greater participation of private industry. The collaboration also supports the broader goals of the Defence Acquisition Procedure, which prioritises indigenous manufacturing and technology transfer.
Industry observers note that the partnership could play an important role in strengthening India’s helicopter ecosystem, particularly as the armed forces look to modernise fleets and replace ageing platforms. The collaboration is expected to contribute to national defence preparedness while boosting India’s position as a growing aerospace manufacturing hub.
