During a detailed Cabinet briefing, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted several major initiatives approved by the government, covering transport infrastructure and legislative matters. The first key decision pertains to the railway sector. The Cabinet has sanctioned three rail multitracking projects across eight districts in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand. These projects are aimed at increasing rail line capacity, enhancing operational efficiency, and supporting regional economic growth. The multitracking will enable smoother train movement, reduce congestion on existing routes, and facilitate faster passenger and freight transport, which is critical for industrial and commercial connectivity in these states.
In addition to rail projects, the Cabinet has also approved the construction of a new integrated airport terminal in Srinagar with an investment of Rs 1,667 crore. The terminal is designed to handle increased passenger traffic, provide modern facilities, and strengthen the region’s air connectivity. This initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to upgrade airport infrastructure across India, improve travel experience, and support tourism and trade in the region.
On legislative matters, the Cabinet briefing also included an update on the Kerala Alteration of Name Bill 2026. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that President Droupadi Murmu will refer the bill to the Kerala state legislative assembly for further consideration. The bill seeks to formalize official changes to certain names within the state, reflecting administrative updates and compliance with legal procedures. The referral by the President ensures that the legislative process is followed in accordance with constitutional requirements, allowing the state assembly to deliberate and pass necessary amendments.
These decisions collectively demonstrate the government’s continued focus on improving infrastructure and administrative efficiency. The rail projects are expected to bring long-term economic benefits to the regions concerned, while the airport terminal is projected to enhance tourism and business connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir. Similarly, the legislative referral underscores the commitment to orderly governance and adherence to statutory processes.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that these approvals are part of a larger vision to strengthen national infrastructure, promote regional development, and ensure smooth legislative procedures. Citizens and stakeholders across the states affected by these projects can anticipate positive impacts in terms of mobility, economic activity, and administrative clarity. As these projects progress, further announcements regarding timelines, funding allocations, and implementation strategies are expected, marking a proactive approach toward modernizing India’s transport and governance frameworks.
