The acknowledgment of dignity, he said, strengthens the bridge between constitutional ideals and the lived experience of people, ensuring that the law remains responsive to changing social realities.

Chief Justice of India B R Gavai has underscored that human dignity is the very foundation of the Indian Constitution, calling it the guiding principle for both governance and society. Speaking at a public event, the CJI highlighted how the framers of the Constitution envisioned a democratic framework rooted in equality, liberty, and respect for individual rights, with dignity serving as the unifying thread.

Justice Gavai stated that the concept of dignity is not confined to legal language but is a lived reality that reflects in the everyday lives of citizens. According to him, constitutional rights such as equality before law, freedom of expression, and protection against discrimination all flow from the recognition of human dignity. He noted that without dignity, constitutional guarantees lose their true meaning.

The CJI elaborated that the judiciary has consistently upheld dignity as a central principle in its interpretations. He cited landmark judgments where the Supreme Court emphasized dignity in matters relating to privacy, personal liberty, and socio-economic rights. The acknowledgment of dignity, he said, strengthens the bridge between constitutional ideals and the lived experience of people, ensuring that the law remains responsive to changing social realities.

Justice Gavai also drew attention to the responsibility of institutions, including the legislature and executive, in maintaining the dignity of citizens. He urged that policies and laws should be framed with a focus on inclusivity, fairness, and compassion. The protection of marginalized communities, empowerment of women, and recognition of diverse identities were described as key components of realizing the constitutional vision.

Reflecting on the broader significance, the CJI observed that dignity is central to India’s democratic ethos. He said the recognition of every individual’s worth reinforces the collective strength of the nation. In his words, “A Constitution is not merely a legal document but a moral compass, and its soul lies in the preservation of dignity.”

The Chief Justice also addressed the role of citizens in nurturing constitutional values. He emphasized that respect for dignity should not be limited to the courts or public offices but must be practiced in families, workplaces, and communities. According to him, everyday conduct rooted in respect and fairness is what truly brings constitutional principles to life.

Legal experts present at the event noted that Justice Gavai’s remarks align with a long tradition of jurisprudence where dignity is viewed as an inseparable aspect of fundamental rights. They highlighted that by centering dignity, the judiciary ensures that laws evolve to protect both individual freedoms and collective harmony.

The CJI concluded his address with a call for renewed commitment to constitutional morality. He said that in a diverse country like India, safeguarding dignity is essential to sustaining unity and social peace. Upholding this principle, he added, requires cooperation between institutions and citizens alike.

His remarks come at a time when debates on constitutional rights, inclusivity, and justice are central to public discourse, reminding both policymakers and citizens that the Constitution’s true strength lies not only in its provisions but in the dignity it guarantees to every individual.

Justice Gavai also drew attention to the responsibility of institutions, including the legislature and executive, in maintaining the dignity of citizens.
