North India is experiencing an intense spell of cold weather and dense fog, with the national capital Delhi placed under an orange alert by the India Meteorological Department. The prolonged cold wave has led to a sharp fall in minimum temperatures across several northern states, affecting daily life and transportation services.
In Delhi, temperatures have dipped below normal levels, with cold winds and persistent fog dominating the mornings. Visibility in several parts of the city dropped to extremely low levels, especially during early hours, making driving conditions hazardous. The orange alert indicates the likelihood of severe cold conditions that may pose health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory illnesses.
Neighbouring states including Punjab, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and parts of Madhya Pradesh are also witnessing similar weather patterns. Many cities reported dense to very dense fog, resulting in delays and cancellations of trains and flights. Several long-distance trains were delayed by hours due to poor visibility, while flight operations at major airports experienced temporary disruptions.
According to meteorological officials, the cold wave is being caused by northerly winds and the absence of cloud cover during the night, leading to rapid heat loss from the ground. The fog formation is attributed to high moisture levels combined with low temperatures and calm wind conditions. These factors have contributed to persistent fog during night and early morning hours.
The IMD has forecast that cold day conditions may continue in isolated pockets of North India over the coming days. While a slight rise in daytime temperatures is expected later in the week, dense fog is likely to remain a concern during morning hours. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during early mornings and to follow traffic advisories issued by local authorities.
Health experts have urged citizens to take preventive measures such as wearing warm clothing, avoiding prolonged exposure to cold, and ensuring adequate ventilation when using heating devices indoors. Homeless shelters across Delhi have been activated to provide relief to vulnerable populations, with additional arrangements made to distribute blankets and warm meals.
State governments and municipal bodies are closely monitoring the situation and have issued guidelines to schools, transport departments, and emergency services. In some areas, schools have adjusted timings to ensure student safety during extreme cold conditions.
The IMD continues to monitor the evolving weather system and will issue updates as necessary. Residents are advised to stay informed through official weather bulletins and exercise caution during foggy conditions.
