The objective is to gather technical and operational details from aircraft manufacturers capable of supplying long range business jets suitable for high level official travel.

The Ministry of Defence has initiated the process to replace the ageing fleet of Embraer Legacy 600 aircraft currently used for VIP transport by issuing a Request for Information. The aircraft are operated by the Communications Squadron of the Indian Air Force and have been in service for nearly two decades.

According to officials familiar with the development, the Request for Information marks the preliminary stage of a structured and phased procurement process. The objective is to gather technical and operational details from aircraft manufacturers capable of supplying long range business jets suitable for high level official travel.

The evaluation process will consider several critical parameters, including operational range, passenger capacity, advanced security features and compliance with military and aviation safety standards. Long term maintenance support and lifecycle costs are also expected to play a key role in the assessment. Officials indicated that the procurement will follow established defence acquisition procedures to ensure transparency and adherence to regulatory norms.

The Embraer Legacy 600 jets have served the Communications Squadron for close to twenty years, facilitating domestic and international travel for senior government officials. Over time, operational requirements have evolved, prompting the need for aircraft with enhanced range, updated avionics and improved security configurations.

While specific aircraft models have not been officially confirmed, industry observers note that wide body long range platforms such as the Boeing 777 business jet variant are among the categories that could meet the requirements outlined in the Request for Information. However, the ministry has not announced any final decision or shortlist at this stage.

Officials clarified that no immediate timeline has been fixed for the procurement. The Request for Information phase allows the government to assess available options, technological capabilities and cost structures before moving to subsequent stages such as issuing a formal tender or Request for Proposal.

The replacement of VIP transport aircraft is considered a routine modernisation measure aimed at ensuring operational reliability and safety. Aircraft used for official travel require specialised communication systems, secure cabins and customised interiors that meet government security protocols.

Defence procurement processes typically involve multiple levels of scrutiny, including technical evaluation, financial assessment and cabinet level approvals where necessary. As such, the acquisition of new long range business jets is expected to proceed through established channels before any contract is finalised.

The development reflects the broader effort by the defence establishment to update and modernise assets in line with current operational needs. Further details regarding specifications, budget allocation and timelines are expected to be released once the next phase of the procurement process begins.
