In a significant move to make medicines more affordable and accessible, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced the establishment of Janaushadhi Kendras near hospitals across the city. These centers, under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), aim to provide high-quality generic medicines at much lower prices compared to branded drugs.
Speaking about the initiative, CM Rekha Gupta emphasized that reducing the cost of essential medicines will ease the financial burden on common citizens, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. She further stated that the Delhi government is committed to ensuring quality healthcare services for all, and this step will significantly benefit patients who struggle with high medical expenses.
Key Features of the Initiative:
Affordable Medicines for All:
- Janaushadhi Kendras will offer essential drugs at prices up to 50-90% lower than market rates.
- Focus on providing high-quality generic medicines to reduce healthcare costs.
Strategic Location Near Hospitals:

- Aimed at supporting underprivileged sections who cannot afford costly medicines.
Expansion Across Delhi:

Improving Public Healthcare:
- Strengthening the existing medical infrastructure by reducing dependency on expensive drugs.
- Encouraging the use of generic medicines, which are as effective as branded ones.
Support for Patients with Chronic Illnesses:
- Special focus on providing low-cost medicines for diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic diseases.
- Availability of surgical items and medical equipment at affordable prices.
Government's Commitment to Healthcare
The initiative is part of the Delhi government’s broader plan to enhance public healthcare services and ensure medical support for all citizens. CM Rekha Gupta highlighted that health is a fundamental right, and no one should suffer due to the high cost of medicines.
Opposition leaders have welcomed the move but have urged the government to ensure proper stock availability and efficient management of these centers. Experts also suggest that alongside affordable medicines, efforts should be made to improve hospital infrastructure and primary healthcare centers in Delhi.
With this initiative, the Delhi government continues to take steps toward universal healthcare access, ensuring that no one is deprived of essential medicines due to financial constraints.
