New Delhi:
The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has issued a critical security warning for WhatsApp users across India. This comes in the wake of newly discovered vulnerabilities that could allow hackers to steal personal data, access chats, and compromise user devices.
The security advisory highlights flaws in certain versions of WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business for Android and iOS platforms. If exploited, these vulnerabilities could allow attackers to execute remote code, trigger denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, or deploy malware through specially crafted video or audio calls and messages.
According to CERT-In, the vulnerabilities stem from how WhatsApp handles incoming messages and media files, making it easier for cybercriminals to send malicious code disguised as regular content. Once a user interacts with such content, the attacker can potentially gain control over the device or extract sensitive information without consent.
⚠️ Key Risks Mentioned:
Unauthorized data access including personal chats, contacts, photos, and videos
Phishing attacks through deceptive links sent via messages
Malware deployment that can slow down or crash devices
Remote access control allowing hackers to operate the device without user knowledge
✅ Steps Recommended to Stay Safe:
Update the App Immediately:
Ensure WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business are updated to the latest versions from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
Enable Two-Step Verification:
Activate two-step verification in WhatsApp settings to add an extra layer of security.
Do Not Click on Suspicious Links:
Avoid tapping on unknown or shortened links received via WhatsApp, especially from unfamiliar contacts or groups.
Review App Permissions:
Limit permissions granted to WhatsApp, such as access to microphone, camera, or storage, unless absolutely necessary.
Use Verified Security Software:
Install reliable antivirus or mobile security apps to detect and block potential threats.
Report and Block Suspicious Numbers:
If you receive strange messages or calls, report and block the sender directly through the app.
With over 500 million WhatsApp users in India, this alert is a reminder that digital vigilance is crucial in today’s interconnected world. Cyber experts have emphasized that while WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption is robust, vulnerabilities in app versions can still be exploited if users don’t regularly update or follow safety protocols.
The government urges users to remain alert and proactive to prevent cyberattacks and data theft. For further details, users can visit the CERT-In website or follow updates through official government cybersecurity advisories.
