According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city received more than the average daily rainfall for August within just a few hours.

Delhi experienced intense rainfall on Saturday, resulting in severe waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and difficulties for residents across multiple parts of the capital. The sudden downpour, which began in the early hours of the morning, quickly inundated low-lying areas, leaving roads submerged and vehicles stranded.

Several key traffic corridors, including stretches of Ring Road, ITO, and parts of South Delhi, witnessed knee-deep water, slowing traffic to a crawl. Commuters reported delays of over an hour in reaching their destinations, while many motorists were forced to push their vehicles after engines stalled in flooded stretches. The heavy rains also affected residential colonies, with water entering ground floors in certain areas.

Public transport services faced significant challenges. Bus operations were disrupted as several routes became impassable, while metro services reported slower operations due to waterlogging near some entry and exit points. Auto-rickshaw and cab drivers increased fares in response to the difficult conditions, adding to the woes of commuters.

The Delhi Traffic Police issued multiple advisories throughout the day, urging citizens to avoid flood-prone stretches and to use navigation apps to track traffic diversions. They also deployed additional personnel at key intersections to manage congestion and guide vehicles through safer routes.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city received more than the average daily rainfall for August within just a few hours. Weather experts attributed the sudden spell to active monsoon conditions over North India, which are expected to persist for the next 24 to 48 hours. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the capital, advising residents to remain cautious and stay updated on weather forecasts.

Municipal authorities initiated emergency measures to address the situation. Teams from the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) were deployed to clear blocked drains and pump out accumulated water from critical junctions. However, the sheer volume of rainwater overwhelmed the drainage infrastructure in many areas, delaying relief efforts.

Local markets and small businesses were also hit by the weather, as shoppers stayed away due to flooded streets. Vendors in open markets, such as Sarojini Nagar and Lajpat Nagar, struggled to protect their goods from water damage, while footfall in malls and commercial hubs dropped sharply.

Residents have expressed concerns over the recurring problem of waterlogging in Delhi during heavy rains. Many have called for long-term infrastructural improvements, including better drainage systems and more efficient water management, to prevent such disruptions in the future.

Despite the challenges, some areas saw a lighter side to the weather, with children playing in rainwater and families enjoying the cooler temperatures after weeks of humid heat. However, health experts have warned of potential risks such as waterborne diseases, advising residents to take precautions, especially when wading through stagnant water.

Authorities have assured that all departments are working in coordination to restore normalcy. With more rain predicted, the focus remains on keeping essential services operational and ensuring public safety.
