According to details available on the official website, the Air Force plans to procure approximately four to six Long Range Business Jets with a minimum passenger carrying capacity of 19 seats.

The Indian Air Force has formally initiated the process to procure four to six Long Range Business Jets to replace its existing fleet of VIP transport aircraft. The move is aimed at modernising the Air Headquarters Communication Squadron based at Palam in New Delhi and ensuring secure, rapid and reliable transportation for senior military leadership and government dignitaries.

As part of the preliminary acquisition procedure, the Indian Air Force has issued a request for information to identify potential vendors and assess available technologies in the market. The request for information marks the first stage of the procurement cycle and is intended to gather inputs from original equipment manufacturers and authorised vendors before issuing a formal tender.

According to details available on the official website, the Air Force plans to procure approximately four to six Long Range Business Jets with a minimum passenger carrying capacity of 19 seats. The aircraft will primarily serve in a VIP transport role and are expected to meet specific operational and security requirements. Vendors have been invited to submit information regarding the products they can offer for consideration.

The proposed acquisition is intended to replace the current fleet of Embraer Legacy 600 aircraft, which have been in service for more than 20 years. The existing fleet, inducted on September 21, 2005, consists of four aircraft named Meghdoot, Vayudoot, Nabhdoot and Gagandoot. These jets have played a key role in transporting senior defence officials and government representatives within India and abroad.

Officials indicated that the replacement will be carried out in a phased manner to ensure continuity of operations. Over time, ageing aircraft can face higher maintenance requirements and operational limitations, making fleet modernisation an important step in maintaining reliability and safety standards.

The Long Range Business Jets under consideration are distinct from the aircraft used exclusively for India’s top constitutional authorities. The President, Vice President and Prime Minister are served by specially configured Boeing 777-300ER aircraft known by the call sign Air India One. These aircraft are equipped with advanced communication and security systems designed specifically for VVIP travel.

In contrast, the proposed Long Range Business Jets will cater to a broader category of senior officials, including military leadership and other government dignitaries. The new aircraft are expected to enhance operational flexibility, provide improved range and efficiency, and incorporate updated avionics and communication systems.

The request for information stage will help the Air Force evaluate technical specifications, cost parameters and delivery timelines before moving to the next phase of procurement. Defence acquisitions typically follow a structured process that includes technical evaluation, commercial negotiations and final approval from the government.

The initiative reflects ongoing efforts by the Indian Air Force to upgrade its support infrastructure and maintain operational readiness across all domains. Further developments are expected once responses from potential vendors are reviewed and the procurement process advances to the next stage.
