The aircraft had taken off from the Indian Air Force station at Jorhat before losing contact with air traffic control shortly after departure.

A Su 30MKI fighter jet belonging to the Indian Air Force crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on March 5 during a routine training mission, leading to the tragic death of two pilots. The aircraft had taken off from the Indian Air Force station at Jorhat before losing contact with air traffic control shortly after departure. The crash has prompted an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the accident.

According to official information, the fighter aircraft took off from Jorhat Airbase in the evening for a training sortie. Shortly after the takeoff, communication with the aircraft was lost at approximately 7.42 pm. The jet soon disappeared from radar, raising concerns among air force authorities. Local residents later reported hearing a loud explosion in the region, which was believed to be the sound of the aircraft crashing.

The Indian Air Force confirmed the incident on Friday morning and announced that both pilots on board the aircraft lost their lives in the crash. The deceased officers were identified as Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar. In a brief statement, the Indian Air Force acknowledged the loss of the two officers and expressed condolences to their families.

The statement said that the air force deeply mourns the loss of the two personnel who sustained fatal injuries in the accident. The force also expressed solidarity with the bereaved families during this difficult time. Senior officials have extended their condolences and paid tribute to the dedication and service of the two pilots.

Rescue and search teams were immediately sent to the crash site after the aircraft was reported missing. Local authorities and security personnel reached the location in the hilly region of Karbi Anglong to assess the situation. Due to the terrain and darkness in the evening hours, the rescue operation faced initial challenges. However, officials were able to locate the crash site and begin recovery efforts.

The Su 30MKI is one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the Indian Air Force fleet and plays a crucial role in the country’s air defence capabilities. The twin engine multirole fighter jet is widely used for air superiority missions, ground attack operations and strategic defence tasks. It is manufactured in India under license and forms a major part of the air force’s combat strength.

Following the crash, the Indian Air Force has ordered a detailed inquiry to determine the cause of the accident. Investigators will examine technical data, flight records and other evidence to understand whether the crash was caused by mechanical failure, technical malfunction or other factors.

Incidents involving military aircraft are rare but are taken very seriously by defence authorities. Investigations typically aim to identify any operational or technical issues to prevent similar accidents in the future.

The tragic loss of the two officers has once again highlighted the risks faced by defence personnel during training missions and operational duties. The Indian Air Force continues to honor the service and sacrifice of its personnel who dedicate their lives to protecting the nation.

The statement said that the air force deeply mourns the loss of the two personnel who sustained fatal injuries in the accident.
