India has taken a crucial step toward marine conservation by signing the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) agreement at the United Nations. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar signed the treaty, emphasizing India’s dedication to maintaining ocean health and resilience.
The BBNJ agreement, formulated under the Law of the Sea, focuses on conserving marine biodiversity and ensuring the sustainable use of resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction, including high seas that extend beyond 200 nautical miles from any nation's shore. Covering about two-thirds of the world's oceans, the agreement bans harmful fishing practices and aims to combat marine pollution.
The treaty, developed over 20 years, also mandates equitable sharing of marine resources, ensuring that no country can claim sovereignty over these resources. India's participation, approved by the Cabinet in July, aligns with its global commitment to environmental conservation and strengthens its strategic presence in international waters.
This move is seen as a reflection of India's proactive stance on global environmental issues, furthering its role in sustainable ocean resource management.
